As you stare at these words and understand their meaning, be thankful. Many people can’t. Their inability to read underscores the continued importance of International Literacy Day (ILD), a United Nations event that began in 1966 and is annually observed tomorrow – Sept. 8.

The Tri-County (PA) Area YWCA, which operates an Adult Literacy Center in the lower level of the National Penn Bank building at 1830 E. High St., Sanatoga, is observing ILD’s 42nd year by providing free books to school-age children. Its book distribution program, called “Cops And Kids,” is aimed at encouraging families to build home libraries.

Cops And Kids takes its name from police-affiliated organizations that were among its first supporters. Book donations now come from a variety of community and public service groups. They’ll benefit selected youngsters in the Greater Pottstown PA area beginning Sept. 24, during a 90-minute celebration at the Y’s headquarters, 315 King St., Pottstown.

Tri-County YWCA literacy tutors teach reading and offer reading assistance to about 300 people every year. Although Pottstown’s adult literacy efforts are funded by Pennsylvania’s Bureau of Adult Basic and Literacy Education, its tutors are volunteers. They are trained during workshops held at the Sanatoga center, and then paired with learners in twice-weekly meetings.

Tutors are always in demand, and the Tri-County Y’s tutors are particularly good at what they do. Its adult literacy programs reportedly rank in the top 11 percent of all such programs statewide. If you have the time, desire and commitment to work as a tutor and help someone become more knowledgeable in English or math, call the Adult Literacy Center at 610-326-READ (7323).

Want a way to mark International Literacy Day with your own kids? Crayola, the Easton PA-based crayon manufacturer, has its an ILD webpage. It offers 13 different coloring activities, 29 craft ideas, 7 greeting cards to send by e-mail and – for home schoolers – 68 ILD-themed lesson plans.
