The Sanatoga-based Visiting Nurse Association of Pottstown (PA) and Vicinity has won a $235,000 general operating grant for 2008-’09 from the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. The award, announced Friday (Sept. 12, 2008), was among the first presented during the United Way’s “Investing In Results” funding competition.
The VNA, 1963 E. High St., said it hopes the same grant will be renewed for two additional years, dependent upon donations to future United Way campaigns.
Established in 1917, the VNA provides full service, reduced-cost or free nursing, medical, home health and hospice services to residents of the Greater Pottstown area. Pottstown VNA President Lucille Gough said her organization enjoys a patient satisfaction rating of more than 90 percent.
The United Way’s competition represents a change in the way it previously issued grants. Instead of again supporting organizations selected during the charity’s 80-year history, the United Way solicited funding proposals from more than 546 agencies. Of them, only 137 – including the VNA – received financial backing based on an assessment of earlier successes.
The Pottstown VNA is a non-profit subsidiary of Home Health Care Management Inc. in Wyomissing PA, which also operates VNAs in Berks County and the Greater Lehigh Valley, as well as a private duty nursing company.
