A Book In The Bag(s)

Found at roadside.

Found at roadside.

In a 1979 movie called “The Jerk,” comedian Steve Martin holds a telephone directory above his head and yells, “The new phone book’s here! The new phone book’s here! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity I need. My name in print. That really makes somebody.”

Sanatogans may feel like that too.

Idearc Media, a phone book publisher, is distributing its hefty, more-than-1,000-pages product to individual households across greater Pottstown PA this week. Homes lining routes on the east side of Lower Pottsgrove Township received theirs late last night and early this morning (Oct. 21, 2008). Most were simply tossed by delivery agents from their cars to the roadside near mailboxes.

The books come wrapped in not one but two 13-inch-by-19-inch plastic bags, which are recyclable. The book itself can be recycled as well, or it can be put on the table next to your telephone … atop what could be a stack of three other competing phone books.
