LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Seventy-eight percent of U.S. consumers answering a recent survey say they’re using more grocery coupons as a result of the recent economic downturn, and 61 percent report they’re using more coupons now than at any other time in their lives.

Survey results were reported Tuesday (Dec. 8, 2008) by New York-based Select Coupon Program. It said respondents cited increased energy costs (21 percent) as the top reason for their heightened coupon use. In second place (20 percent) were those who relied on coupons because someone in the household lost a job. Other reasons reported for the increase included stock market declines, home foreclosure and retirement.

Consumer Reports magazine estimates that an average household can save up to $678 per year on food when using grocery coupons. If you shop at selected stores in Lower Pottsgrove, you may do even better.

“Americans are taking food savings very seriously during this recession,” a program spokeswoman said.
