Redner's Market, North Charlotte Street

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Redner’s Warehouse Markets recalled two ice cream novelty products Friday morning (Jan. 30, 2009) in light of the salmonella scare, the Easton (PA) Express-Times reported.

The Reading-based grocery store chain, which operates a store on North Charlotte Street, voluntarily recalled its Redner’s-brand Sundae Cones (UPC 1598410417) and Round Top Vanilla Cones (UPC 1598404006). No illnesses have been reported in connection with either product. All other Redner’s ice cream products are considered safe for continued sale and consumption, the company said.

The announcement follows a day after the federal Food and Drug Administration and Peanut Corporation of America expanded a list of potentially-contaminated products.

Consumers who have purchased anything covered by Redner’s recall were urged to return the product to their local Redner’s store for a full refund. For more information, call 610-926-3700.

Dent Says Recovery Bill Needs Work

Dent Says Recovery Bill Needs Work

Charlie Dent

Charlie Dent

WASHINGTON DC – Republicans in the U.S. Senate say they’ll search for a compromise with President Barack Obama on an economic stimulus bill that could end up costing around $900 billion, but they want tax cuts to play a large role, Reuters News Service reported today (Friday, Jan. 30, 2009). The plan already passed the House solely on party lines, but Lower Pottsgrove‘s congressman opposed it because he thinks jobs won’t be created fast enough.

Rep. Charlie Dent, whose PA 15th District includes the township, on Thursday said Obama’s recovery bill “doesn’t focus most resources on the immediate need for job creation.” Instead, it needs more “shovel-ready projects,” Dent claimed.

Only 7 percent of money to be spent under the bill will be used by the end of fiscal 2009, and another 38 percent by fiscal 2010, according to Congressional Budget Office estimates cited by Dent. Yet it devotes less than 10 percent of spending on hard infrastructure projects “proven to create and preserve the greatest number of American jobs,” he added.

Although he supports many programs and projects contained within the bill, Dent said “they should be considered through the normal appropriations process.”

Wednesday Disrupted By Ice, Snow

Wednesday Disrupted By Ice, Snow

SANATOGA PA – Schools closed across western Montgomery County PA, organizations canceled events, and driving proved to be hazardous for some Wednesday (Jan. 28, 2009) during a snow and ice storm that began the previous night and didn’t relent until mid-day, when precipitation turned to rain.

Today’s (Jan. 29, 2009) weather will be drier, the National Weather Service said, but drivers may still find it tough going. It issued a “special weather statement” at 4:21 this morning, warning that roads with low traffic may not have been treated for icy spots created as the skies cleared and temperatures fell well below freezing. The chill of an 8-mph westerly wind will make things feel even colder, according to Weather.com.

Temperatures Wednesday were within historic ranges. The high of 38F degrees exactly hit the average for the day, according to Weather.com, and the low of 18F degrees was only 5F degrees below that average.

State and township road crews Tuesday had their work cut out for them. A brine mixture was sprayed on state-maintained highways early in the evening. Then plow crews set to work through much of Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, clearing roads of the accumulated snow and salting them for safety.
