Pottstown's Neapco Lays Off In Midwest

Pottstown's Neapco Lays Off In Midwest

POTTSTOWN PA – Thirty-three jobs at the Beatrice NE manufacturing and distribution center of Neapco LLC, the vehicle drive train manufacturer headquartered at 740 Queen St., were eliminated last week, The Associated Press reported Monday.

Beatrice plant manager Duane Culver blamed the “soft business environment,” according to the report that appeared on the website of Nebraska television stations KOLN and KGIN. It added that Culver said Neapco is working with local agencies to help the laid-off workers find new jobs.

The layoff affected 19 percent of the 170-member work force at Neapco’s Beatrice plant, which The AP said had been operating for 28 years. Neapco also has distribution centers in Riverside CA and Missisauga, Ontario, Canada, and assembly operations in Reynosa, Mexico, according to the company’s website.

Stimulus Plan Can Be A Local Money Pump

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Tuesday (Feb. 17, 2009) is a big day for President Barack Obama, who during a visit to Denver CO will sign into law a $790 billion economic stimulus package approved by the Democrat-controlled Congress last week and designed to attack the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

The bill was opposed by most Republicans in the House and Senate, among them Lower Pottsgrove’s congressman, Rep. Charlie Dent (PA 15th District). Dent described the bill Friday as “unfocused” and “inflated,” and said he doubted it would “restart our economy and assist those who are struggling.”

Millions of dollars are expected to come this way from passage of the economic stimulus plan in Washington.

Millions of dollars are expected to come this way from passage of the economic stimulus plan in Washington.

It will, nonetheless, pump lots of federal money this way. Once in place, what might the package do for residents of Sanatoga, Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township, and the Pottsgrove School District? An Associated Press (AP) analysis published Saturday said it includes:

Tax breaks that add about $13 a week to the paychecks of millions of Americans, starting around June. In two-income households, like many of those locally, that’s an extra $676 by year’s end. Think of it as almost 23 more bags of groceries at $30 a bag, or another 338 gallons of gas for your car at today’s price of $2 per gallon.

A jump-start for home sales. First-time home buyers who make their purchases by Dec. 1 (2009) would be eligible for an $8,000 tax credit. In Lower Pottsgrove, where in 2007 the median price of a single-family home was $243,982, deducting the credit would be like getting a 3.2-percent discount. In addition, real estate-related work – for brokers and agents, mortgage lenders, appraisers, and others – starts to return. The township and school district benefit too, because each gets a portion of realty transfer tax from the property’s sale.

Tax credits of up to $1,500 for owners improving an existing home with energy-efficient windows, furnaces or air conditioners. Locally, that also could generate more business for retailers like Home Depot and A.D. Moyer Lumber, both located on Armand Hammer Boulevard in the township.

A jump-start for car sales. People who buy a new car before Dec. 31 can deduct the sales taxes they pay from their income tax returns. On a $20,000 car price, that saves about $1,200.

Money to pay for college. “The maximum Pell Grant, which helps the lowest-income students attend college, would increase from $4,731 currently to $5,350 starting July 1,” according to The AP. That would cover three-quarters of the average cost of a four-year public college degree. It’s a fast benefit for the hundreds of students who will graduate this year from Pottsgrove High School, and a slower but sustained benefit for the West (Pottstown) campus of Montgomery County Community College, which attracts a portion of those tuition dollars.

Money for infrastructure. Both Lower Pottsgrove and Limerick townships have high hopes that some portion of the billions of dollars allocated in the package for highway, bridge, sewer and other federal and state projects get invested into fixing current and future traffic problems at the Sanatoga intersection of U.S. Route 422. It’s possible, but not guaranteed, and still a couple of years away.

Money for school districts. “The stimulus sets up a $54 billion fund to help prevent or restore state budget cuts” to education, The AP reported, of which $39 billion must go toward kindergarten through 12th grade and higher education. That’s about $1 billion per state. If all 501 school districts in Pennsylvania were to benefit equally from that money (hint: they won’t), the impact on the Pottsgrove School District would amount to a couple of  million dollars. But “this money may go out much more slowly,” according to The AP. “States have five years to spend the dollars.”

There’s also money in the package – billions more – to benefit the poor, pay for police protection, clean the environment, and make health insurance more affordable.

But Americans will pay the piper in the long run, The AP warned. The stimulus plan “will jack up the federal debt … (affecting) us all directly for years, as well as our children and possibly grandchildren, in higher taxes and probably reduced government services. It will also force continued government borrowing, increasingly from China, Japan, Britain, Saudi Arabia and other foreign creditors.”

What They Sold For

What They Sold For

Thay paid how much?

They paid how much?

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – The top price paid for a home within the township from Oct. 28-Nov. 3, 2008, was $224,000, the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper reports.

The home is located at 2945 Shire Dr. A second, at 1591 Buchert Rd., sold for $210,000; and a third, at 1105 Walnut Ridge Estates, went for $138,300. This week’s top reported prices were listed Sunday (Feb. 15, 2009) in “The Top 50,” the newspaper’s weekly review of highest prices paid for homes sold within the city of Philadelphia and the townships in its surrounding counties.

By contrast, during the same period, the top home sales price in Pottstown Borough, immediately to the west was $192,000; Limerick Township, east, $361,345; New Hanover Township, northeast, $377,500; Upper Pottsgrove Township, northwest, $213,485; and in North Coventry Township, south, $220,000.

Notebook Worthy

SANATOGA  PA – Weekend (Feb. 14-15, 2009) jottings from a reporter’s notebook, in no particular order:

A Premium For Fast Food

Patrons of the McDonald’s Restaurant, 1428 E. High St., Pottstown PA, are being urged to help it break a record next Saturday (Feb. 21, 2009), and some will win a reward for their efforts.

"The free burger's mine. Yours is the one you paid for."

"My burger's free. The paid-for one is yours."

The restaurant last week began advertising its “Super Saturday Challenge,” with inserts placed in every bag that flies out the store’s doors. Between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, the flyer says, McDonald’s crews want to serve more customers from their drive-through windows than ever before, to beat the current record. They don’t report what the current record is, presumably because they want to avoid sharing business secrets with Taco Bell, across the street to the north, or Burger King or Wendy’s, down the street to the east.

Suffice it to say the store wants lots of business. And it’s paying customers to play along.

Every 10th car that orders from the drive-through (sorry, but you folks eating inside don’t count this time) will receive a coupon good for a free extra value meal – a large sandwich, french fries and a drink – redeemable on a future visit.

Assume that it takes three minutes to process each order from start to finish. Assume that the line for orders forms promptly at 8. That means the first lucky meal winner should be in line at about 8:27 a.m.

There But For The Grace Of God …

At first glance, many people say they feel sorry for the guy who stands each weekend at the southwest corner of Ridge Pike and Rupert Road, near the border of Lower Pottsgrove and Limerick (PA) townships. He was out there again most of Sunday (Feb. 15, 2009), holding a placard that described a sale on tableware in the Oneida Silver store at the Philadelphia Premium Outlets.

Don’t pity him; admire him. In this recession, when bread-winners in some Lower Pottsgrove homes are enduring layoffs and losing paychecks, he’s bundled up against the elements, silently earning an hourly wage. A job’s a job, even when it’s cold, wind-blown, exhaust-choking, foot-aching work.

If It’s Broken, It’s Fixable

Sign seen outside the office of a Reading PA chiropractor on Valentine’s Day: “We’re here to help if you fall head over heels, in love or otherwise.”

Give The Public What It Needs

Here’s a more sobering sign, also seen Valentine’s Day while driving through Annville PA, east of Hershey. In a front window, the Batdorf Grille announced its new “Recession Menu,” filled with low-priced eats for the hungry who are also cash-strapped.

Visiting the zoo.

Visiting the zoo.

Sounds Like Stereotyping

At Hershey’s ZooAmerica wildlife park Saturday, a couple walked arm-in-arm past the mountain lion‘s cage. The cage holds two animals, male and female, but only one was outside basking in the bright mid-day sun. The lion was on its back, eyes closed, its paws raised high into the air. The woman passing by turned to her companion, tapped him on the shoulder, and pointed to the furry sunbather. “Must be the male,” she said.

Wanted: Nurses, State Says

Needed ... a lot.

Needed ... a lot.

HARRISBURG PA – If you’re looking for a job in Pennsylvania, it sure does help to be a nurse … almost any kind of nurse.

More than 8,000 jobs for registered nurses (RNs) across the state will go unfilled in 2010, as well as more than 7,000 jobs for licensed practical nurses (LPNs), because there aren’t enough trained people available for the positions, the state Department of Labor and Industry said Wednesday (Feb. 11, 2009).

According to department forecasts, the state next year expects to fall short of between 8,000 and 14,400 RNs it says will be needed to fill an estimated 146,000 jobs. It also estimates a shortage of between 7,100 and 8,400 LPNs. Both are due to increasing health care demands that coincide with Pennsylvania’s aging population.

The shortage gap is closing, state Labor Secretary Sandi Vito claimed. The newest estimates are less dire than reported during 2005. “However, the aging of residents makes it very clear that there is more work to be done,” Vito added.

Free Admission Newest Military Benefit

Appreciated.

Appreciated.

HARRISBURG PA – Active duty members of the armed forces, members of Pennsylvania’s National Guard and Reserve activated by the federal government, and their families all can enjoy a new perk when visiting state historical sites. They get in free.

Pennsylvania’s Historical and Museum Commission said Tuesday (Feb. 10, 2009) it would not charge admission to those in active service at 23 locations it supervises. All that’s needed to receive free tickets is a form of ID that demonstrates current service, the commission said.

Among commission sites closest to Sanatoga are the Daniel Boone Homestead in Birdsboro PA (16 miles west), the Conrad Weiser Homestead in Womelsdorf PA (37 miles northwest), and Graeme Park in Horsham PA (38 miles east).

Some 4,000 members of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard 56th Stryker Brigade are currently deployed in Iraq. Nearly 1,000 state National Guard soldiers from the 28th Combat Aviation Brigade are also on their way to Iraq.
