SANATOGA PA – Richard Smith officially became the newest member of the Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Police Department with a formal swearing-in ceremony that was the first order of business during Monday’s (March 2, 2009) meeting of the township Board of Commissioners.

Smith's oath.

Magisterial District Judge John Durkin presided over the induction – in front of friends, family members, and the board’s meeting audience – as Smith placed his hand on a Bible and swore his officer’s oath:

“I, Richard Ryan Smith, do solemnly swear that I will support, obey and defend the Constitution of the United States of America and the Constitution of this Commonwealth, and that I will discharge the duties of Police Officer of Lower Pottsgrove Township, with fidelity.”

Cameras clicked, flashes popped, hands were shaken all around, and the crowd applauded Smith as he smiled and endured the attention. He succeeds former Officer Kathy Foltz, who retired in January.
