KING OF PRUSSIA PA – The region’s job news isn’t all bad, according to personnel experts at Robert Half International. Its second quarter 2009 survey of chief financial officers (CFOs) for Philadelphia area companies with 20 or more employees, released last Tuesday (March 3, 2009), indicates 5 percent expect to add accounting and finance staffers through June, and 86 percent plan no change in staffing.
Do the math and that means 7 percent plan layoffs or other reductions during the quarter, but the status quo majority may be a good thing: “Businesses are choosing … to maintain staff levels until they see definitive signs of an improving economy,” said Max Messmer, Robert Half chairman and chief executive officer.
In addition, Messmer said, companies that are hiring are taking longer to do so. “They are more selective because they can be,” due to a larger pool of skilled applicants available, he noted. Employers report taking extra time to identify and hire the best candidates available.
Robert Half International, founded in 1948, owns Accountemps, Robert Half Finance & Accounting, Robert Half Management Resources, and Office Team. Its businesses supply temporary, full-time and senior-level project workers to employers with hiring needs. Locally, Half operates a Management Resources office at 656 Swedesford Rd., Wayne PA, 19 miles southeast of Sanatoga; and an Accountemps and Office Team office at 1200 Broadcasting Rd., Wyomissing PA, 23 miles northwest of Sanatoga.
