POTTSTOWN PA – Union representatives Friday morning (March 27, 2009) displayed a banner outside Pottstown Memorial Medical Center, proclaiming “Shame On Pottstown Hospital,” to protest the use of non-union subcontractors by a company hired to renovate portions of the hospital’s interior.

Two men, who identified themselves as Montgomery County PA residents Mike Long and Bill McCall, stood with the banner facing east-bound traffic on East High Street at the corner of Armand Hammer Boulevard. Both said they were associated with the Metropolitan Regional Council of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

Long distributed a one-sided, single-page handout to passers-by that objected to the use of a non-union subcontractor, Wallworks Inc., by the hospital’s general contractor, Wohlsen Construction Inc., for some of the renovation work. The handout noted the union was “not asking anyone to cease work or refuse to make deliveries.”
