LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Looks like the township didn’t make this cut.
BusinessWeek Magazine‘s online edition last Tuesday (March 17, 2009) released its list of America’s 10 Wealthiest Towns. Neither Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township or Sanatoga village were to be found there.

Of places snooty enough to break into the Top 10, five are in California; hey, if the Left Coast is so great, why is it so broke? Three are in New York, where there’s still snow on the ground. Illinois and Maryland have one each.
The magazine ranked its most moneyed municipalities based on the 2008 net income and 2008 net worth of their residents. The list:
- Brookville NY: average income, $328,404; average net worth, $1,670,075;
- Atherton CA: $380,535; $1,648,161;
- Rolling Hills CA: $324,190; $1,647,622;
- Kenilworth IL: $334,634; $1,619,702;
- Hillsborough CA: $300,943; $1,668,732;
- Roslyn Estates NY: $298,935; $1,664,191;
- Hidden Hills CA: $318,843; $1,630,085;
- Oyster Bay Cove NY: 317,661; $1,625,524;
- (tie) Chevy Chase MD: $311,170; $1,635,311; and
- (tie) Los Altos Hills CA: $298,510; $1,653,676.
By the way, the median household income in Sanatoga during 2007 was $59,324, according to U.S. Census data … so we fell just a little short.

NORRISTOWN PA -Three candidates have cross-filed petitions in upcoming primary elections to eventually fill the seat being vacated by Lower Pottsgrove Judge John Durkin; incumbents only have filed for re-election to the Pottsgrove School District Board of School Directors; and three people have entered single-party-only filings to become a Lower Pottsgrove township commissioner.
That’s the quick take on the official 2009 list of candidates for public office whose names will appear on Montgomery County PA’s May primary ballots. The list identifies candidates who have successfully filed primary petitions seeking to represent designated political parties for election to available positions in the fall. It was released to the public Tuesday (March 24, 2009) by the county’s Voter Services office.
Here’s a “very local” version of the list, compiled by The Sanatoga Post, which consists solely of those running for office in Lower Pottstown (PA) Township and the Pottsgrove School District:

Local candidates who filed primary petitions. Offices are separated by white. Republican filings appear in red; Democrats in blue.
Additionally, one Republican filed for primary election candidacy as Judge of Election in Lower Pottsgrove; and one Democrat and two Republicans filed for Inspector of Election. None of the petitions filed for Lower Pottsgrove or Pottsgrove School District positions were challenged or withdrawn, according to Voter Services.
Voter Services proved to be more efficient in making the lists available than even it expected. In an e-mail reply to an inquiry Tuesday morning from The Post, the department said the list would be available sometime today (Wednesday, March 25, 2009). But by mid-afternoon Tuesday it was already being offered from the Voter Services’ web home page for download as a 22-page Adobe Acrobat document.
Editor’s Note: The Sanatoga Post looks to publish a series of reports related to both the primary and general elections during coming months. If you are running for a public office that will be decided in whole or part by Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township voters, we want to ensure your candidacy is included in our coverage. Please introduce yourself to Managing Editor Joe Zlomek via e-mail to The Post (sanatoga@yahoo.com), including your full name, address, contact phone number and e-mail address, and he will follow up.

POTTSTOWN PA – Gerard J. Hoffman, a former principal and faculty member at St. Pius X Roman Catholic High School, 844 N Keim St., has been removed from the ministry in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia by Cardinal Justin Rigali “following an investigation by church officials that found he sexually abused a minor more than 30 years ago,” The Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper reported Monday (March 23, 2009).
Hoffman, 64, has agreed to accept a supervised life of prayer and penance at a home for retired priests in Delaware County, The Inquirer said. He was first accused of abuse in July 2008.
Hoffman was a faculty member at St. Pius from 1976 to 1988, and principal from 1990 to 1993.

No longer a right-on-red turn.
SANATOGA PA – Motorists beware. It’s now against the law to turn right (west) on a red light from the southbound lane of Rupert Road at its intersection with Ridge Pike (East High Street), near the Sanatoga interchange of U.S. Route 422. A new traffic control – specifically, a sign denying the turn – was installed there earlier this month.
Patrick McGill of Rivendell Lane, who last December suggested Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township look into limiting right turns at the corner, due to the potential for accidents, was among the first to notice. He thanked the township Board of Commissioners and Manager Rodney Hawthorne for their action on the matter during the board’s meeting last Thursday (March 19, 2009).
The ability of southbound, right-turning Rupert Road drivers to see fast-moving westbound Ridge Pike traffic approach the intersection is hindered by an automotive repair garage and parked vehicles on the northeast corner. Commissioners authorized a traffic study four months ago to determine if the right-on-red turns should be eliminated.
The busy intersection receives heavy traffic with the Turkey Hill convenience store at its northwest corner (3051 E. High St.), and also serves as an entrance to 422 at the interchange.
