PMMC Seeks Patient Choice Nominees

PMMC Seeks Patient Choice Nominees

POTTSTOWN PA – Former patients of Pottstown Memorial Medical Center (PMMC), or their family members, are being asked to nominate a hospital nurse whose care impressed them as a potential recipient of PMMC’s 2009 Patient Choice Award.

The award is intended to recognize quality care, comfort and compassion offered by PMMC nurses during the course of their duties, hospital Chief Nursing Officer Kim Jack said Monday (March 23, 2009). It will be presented during National Nurses’ Week, May 6-12 (2009), to one individual chosen from among nominations sent by the public.

National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6, also known as National Nurses Day, through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

Patients “see the little things that matter so much on a very personal level,” Jack said. “That’s why we are asking patients to help us make the choice.”

Nominations will be accepted until April 29 (2009; Wednesday). To nominate a nurse, send the hospital his or her name, and a few paragraphs explaining the nomination, along with the patient’s name, address and phone number. Entries can be submitted by e-mail, fax (610-327-7432), or by mail to Erin Scheetz, Administration, PMMC, 1600 E. High St, Pottstown PA 19464.

Limerick Unit Shut Down As Planned

LIMERICK PA – Unit 2 at Exelon Nuclear‘s Limerick Generating Station was safely shut down by its operators for scheduled re-fueling and maintenance shortly after midnight this morning (Monday, March 23, 2009), company spokesman Joseph Szafran reported.

Unit 1 will continue to generate electricity during the Unit 2 shutdown.

The shutdown completes a successful 402-day run of Unit 2, and also set a new record of 363 days in which both Units 1 and 2 ran continuously, Szafran said. He did not name a date on which the unit would be re-started, or the timeframe for maintenance activities. Limerick Site Vice President Chris Mudrick said teams had been preparing for the outage for “more than a year” and intend to conduct about “19,000 activities on a variety of plant components and systems.”

Teams will be comprised of an additional 2,000 skilled workers “from other Exelon sites, local union halls, travelers from outside the area, and specialized vendors, according to Szafran.

The tasks include replacing a third of the reactor’s fuel and performing extensive inspections, Mudrick said. Many activities performed during the shutdown cannot be completed while the plant is running, he added. All are meant to ensure electricity production for another 24-month operating cycle once the unit goes back on line.

Both of Limerick’s units are boiling water reactors designed by General Electric.  Unit 1 is capable of generating 1,149 net megawatts; Unit 2,  1,146 net megawatts. Together, they produce enough power to support the electricity needs of more than two million average homes.

Editor’s Addendum (March 25, 2009):

Unit 2 last shut down for re-fueling between March 12 and April 4, 2007, according to a March 23 (2009) report from Reuters News Service, which cited U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission documents.

It added that on March 20 (2009; Friday), the unit was operating at 90-percent capacity and then coasted to shut-down.

As a measurement of the unit’s power-generating ability, Reuters said, one megawatt powers about 800 homes in Pennsylvania.

Pottstown Hosts Historic Home Show

Pottstown Hosts Historic Home Show

POTTSTOWN PA – A day-long historic home show and cultural fair Saturday (March 21, 2009) at Montgomery County Community College‘s West Campus in Pottstown PA attracted a crowd interested in home repair, refurbishing, and the borough’s arts and culture. The hit speaker of the show was Dr. Lori Verderame, antiques and collectibles columnist for The (Pottstown PA) Mercury newspaper.

But arts and cultural organizations played a prominent role at the show as well. Betsy Chapman of Village Productions, and Cathy Paretti, gallery director of The Gallery School of Pottstown, both addressed how cultural activities can play a larger role in growing business in Pottstown.

What They Sold For

What They Sold For

They paid how much?

They paid how much?

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – For the second time this month, not a single home sold in the township made the list of top prices paid for area housing, as reported during the period of Dec. 15-19, 2008, by the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper.

This week’s top reported prices were listed Sunday (March 22, 2009) in “The Top 50,” the newspaper’s weekly review of highest prices paid for homes sold within the city of Philadelphia and the townships in its surrounding counties.

By contrast, during the same period, the top home sales price in Pottstown PA Borough, immediately to the west was $220,000; Limerick PA Township, east, $345,000; New Hanover PA Township, northeast, $408,544; Upper Pottsgrove PA Township, northwest, $120,000; and in North Coventry PA Township, south, $380,021.

Scout, Trout. Trout, Scout. Say Hello

Not quite as pleasant as he expected.

Not quite as pleasant as he expected.

KNAUERTOWN PA – “Oooh, they’re alive and all slimy and stuff,” a young Cub Scout exclaimed, as he reached into a fishing net for his first-ever close encounter with a live trout.

“Well, they’re fish. That’s how fish are,” a man with a camera, presumably the scout’s father, responded.

That was an exchange typical of the introduction to fisheries education many visitors received Saturday (March 21, 2009) at Warwick County Park, off PA Route 23 about 14 miles southwest of Sanatoga.

The state Fish and Boat Commission arrived at about noon to stock French Creek, which runs through the park, with trout for the fishing season that begins next month. Dozens of people made themselves available to help.

More than 3,000 trout arrived from a Central Pennsylvania fish hatchery via tank truck.

More than 3,000 trout arrived from a Central Pennsylvania fish hatchery via tank truck.

More than 3,000 trout were hauled into the park by a commission tank truck that made the trek from Central Pennsylvania. After it stopped in a parking lot a short distance from the creek, scouts and others in the crowd were allowed to climb atop the tanker for one-on-one meetings with what likely will be someone’s fresh-caught dinner in just a couple of weeks.

Then 25-gallon pails were filled with water and fish, and hand-carried and gently emptied by volunteers into the easily flowing creek. A different kind of crowd, one that’s hungrier and armed with bait and tackle, will similarly line the creek banks on opening day, April 4 (2009; Saturday), to try to take out what got put in.

The weather was gorgeous for the event, with bright sun, a light breeze, and temperatures in the 50s.

Notebook Worthy

SANATOGA  PA – Weekend (March 21-22, 2009) jottings from a reporter’s notebook, in no particular order:

For Falcon Lovers Everywhere

The last falcon family in Harrisburg, circa May 2008.

The last falcon family in Harrisburg, May 2008.

Pottsgrove Falcons boosters, and bird-lovers too, take note. The state Department of Environmental Protection has resumed its live, 24-hour web cam broadcast of a peregrine falcon nest that sits on a ledge of the Rachel Carson State Office Building in Harrisburg PA. Two cameras stream footage of an annually returning pair of falcons via the department website to interested viewers around the world.

This will be the fifth year this pair of falcons has nested at the Carson building. In each of the past three years, the female falcon has laid a clutch of five eggs. The eggs should begin to hatch around Mother’s Day (May 10, 2009) and the young falcons, or eyases, will begin to take their first flights, or fledge, around Father’s Day (June 21, 2009). To date, the Carson nest has produced 39 eggs.

Athletic Directors Recognize Pottsgrove’s DeRenzo

Pottsgrove School District Athletic Director Gary DeRenzo will be honored Thursday night (March 26, 2009) during an awards banquet in Hershey PA, at the 42nd annual conference of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Directors Association (PSADA), as its choice for 2009 Pennsylvania Region I Athletic Director of the Year. DeRenzo, the chief Falcon among Pottsgrove Falcons, has a long history of service to both PSADA and the community.

If you play tennis against DeRenzo, reports an informed source (translation: someone who’s lost to him before), “beware of his backhand.”

Tax Dollars At Work

A legal notice published Friday (March 20, 2009) on behalf of the Montgomery County Housing Authority cost county taxpayers a significant amount of money. It announced the authority had scheduled a meeting of its board of directors, and invited the public to attend. The meeting date? Thursday, March 12 … eight days earlier.

Not A Sign Left

Sign makers became sign takers last week, as the last vestiges of the Norco Auto Group dealership on East High Street in Sanatoga – its exterior signs – were removed. All that remains as evidence on the building’s facade are lighter white spaces where the signs were once affixed. The dealership closed in late 2008.

A Belief That Runs Deep

Most residents of Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township are, more or less, familiar with Pottsgrove PA, zip code 19464, a U.S. Census-designated place (CDP) located on North Charlotte Street in the general area of Ringing Rocks Park. They may not, however, know its distant cousin, Potts Grove PA, zip code 17865, located 134 miles northwest of Sanatoga along Interstate 80 about midway between Bloomsburg and Lock Haven.

Tiny Potts Grove made news last week (Monday, March 16, 2009) in the pages of The (Sunbury PA) Daily Item newspaper. It reported that Allen R. Reynolds, a 62-year-old retiree from ConAgra Foods and the state Department of Transportation, this year observes his 40th anniversary as one of 15 active volunteer members of the Potts Grove Fire Company.

Daily Item reporter Rick Dandes wrote about Reynolds, now the department’s chief emeritus, and his dedication to the job. From Dandes’ article: The most gratifying aspect of the work comes when you help people, Reynolds believes. “If you can keep them safe and preserve their property so there is minimal damage, it’s a job well done.”

Whether it’s at Potts Grove or Pottsgrove, or inside the fire houses of Sanatoga or Ringing Hill, you’ll hear much the same sentiment from almost every firefighter you meet.

It’s Always “Sunney” In Sanatoga

Their hearts were in the right place.

Their hearts were in the right place.

To serve guests dessert during its March 15 (2009) Monte Carlo Night fund-raiser at Sunnybrook Ballroom, the Boyertown (PA) Rotary Club ordered treats from a bakery. It lined a table with trays of chocolate-covered eclairs and puff pastries, and at the center placed a multi-tiered, beautifully decorated cake.

Atop the cake, in carefully hand-frosted blue script, were the words “Monte Carlo At Sunneybrook,” a phrase that unfortunately included an unnecessary second “e.”

No matter. “Think of the alternative. They could have spelled it ‘Monty Carlo At Sunnybrook’,” with an errant “y,” one wag pointed out. “Then people would be asking, who’s Monty?”

Isn’t It Ironic?

A supervised, five-man crew of inmates from the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Eagleville PA arrived Monday morning (March 16, 2009) at Lower Pottsgrove’s municipal building, 2199 Buchert Rd. They were brought in rake leaves and accumulated winter debris from the building’s surrounding flower beds and landscaping.

Immediately recognizable in bright orange jumpsuits, the crew started at the front parking lot and worked its way ’round back … to just outside the entrance of the township Police Department.

Young Brains Crave Food

Ask any student: taking tests is tough work. Last week was particularly difficult at Pottsgrove Middle School, 1351 N. Hanover St., where all 735 students were required to take the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) exams. To make that grueling task a little easier, school cafeteria workers ordered snacks and organized snack breaks in shifts for all classes.

Indispensible In A Newsroom

Copy editors are the folks who keep news reporters honest and readable. They catch spelling errors, fix typos, and check the math, among other tasks, in stories about to be published. Among those in that beloved group at The (Pottstown PA) Mercury – Lower Pottsgrove’s newspaper of record – is its online editor, Eileen Faust. She’s been accepted as a member of the American Copy Editors Society, that organization announced last Monday (March 16, 2009).
