Dent Proposes Medical Freedom Guarantee

Dent Proposes Medical Freedom Guarantee

Medical choices ahead.

Medical choices ahead.

WASHINGTON DC – Worried about the problems presented by health care rationing in Canada and the United Kingdom, Lower Pottsgrove congressman Charlie Dent (PA-15th Dist.) and Illinois Rep. Mark Kirk said Wednesday (May 20, 2009) they had written and would introduce proposed legislation which they claim guarantees private health care cannot be restricted by the government.

Their Medical Rights Act would prohibit any ability the government might claim to take over health care decisions for families. Canadian law actually bans patients from paying for care themselves, even if they are denied care, and stories of poor care under Britain’s government-run system are common, Dent said.

“One of the greatest strengths of our health care system is that Americans can rely on getting the care that they need when they need it. This legislation will assure Americans that their health care decisions will continue to be made between themselves and their physician,” the congressman added.

In March, President Barack Obama outlined three principles for health care reform: lower costs, increased choice and expanded access. Dent endorsed those goals, and noted that Congress was preparing to debate health care reform proposals this summer.

Kropp Appears To Be Next Local Judge

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Edward Kropp Sr., a Pottstown police detective whose primary election campaign emphasized his law enforcement experience, appeared Tuesday (May 19, 2009) to have handily won both the Democrat and Republican primaries for judge in Magisterial District 38-1-12, which includes Lower Pottsgrove and part of Pottstown.

Volunteers work the polls Tuesday outside Berean Bible Church in Lower Pottsgrove.

The twin victories virtually assure Kropp of winning election in November to the seat now held by retiring Judge John Durkin. Like Kropp, both also cross-filed on Republican and Democrat ballots.

Tables showing individual party results in the contest, made available early Wednesday (May 20, 2009) from the Montgomery County (PA) Board of Elections website, appear below. NORRISTOWN PA – Primary election voter turnout Tuesday (May 19, 2009) in Montgomery County (PA) was light, the county Board of Elections’ unofficial results show. Slightly more than 13 percent of all registered voters eligible to cast ballots in their parties’ primaries did so, according to the compilation of voting machine (“cartridge”) and absentee ballots.

Republican voter turnout, as measured by both vote count and percentage of those registered, was higher than that of Democrats.

Tables showing the overall county results, made available early Wednesday (May 20, 2009) from the board’s website, appear below. Registration and turnout numbers specifically for Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township were not immediately available.

Montgomery County (PA) Voter Registration and Turnout
586,630 Voters
Vote Count Percent
Cartridge Turnout 75,434 12.86%
Absentee Turnout 960 0.16%
Total 76,394 13.02%

Democratic Registration and Turnout
264,838 Voters
Vote Count Percent
Cartridge Turnout 35,519 13.41%
Absentee Turnout 360 0.14%
Total 35,879 13.55%

Republican Registration and Turnout
238,203 Voters
Vote Count Percent
Cartridge Turnout 39,915 16.76%
Absentee Turnout 600 0.25%
Total 40,515 17.01%

Because voters registered as independents cannot participate in Pennsylvania primary elections, the board showed the total “non-partisan registration and turnout” as zero.

Shurr Happy With Tuesday's Effort

Homecoming Queen contender Gabby Shurr at work Tuesday night in McDonald's Restaurant.

POTTSTOWN PA – Hungry voters showed plenty of support Tuesday for Gabrielle “Gabby” Schurr.

Although final dollar totals aren’t yet known from Schurr’s efforts last night (May 19, 2009) to raise funds that benefit Pottstown’s Independence Day celebration, her mother, Roxanne, proclaimed the night “a success” in an e-mail to The Sanatoga Post.

Shurr is the Pottsgrove High School candidate competing against others from Pottstown, Owen J. Roberts, and St. Pius X high schools for the title of Pottstown’s July 4 homecoming queen. The winner of the annual competition is decided by which candidate raises the most money to help offset the costs of the borough’s multi-day holiday celebration.

The non-profit Pottstown July 4th Committee, which sponsors the contest and is responsible for the borough’s Independence Day observance, hopes to raise $40,000 in donations this year.

The McDonald’s Restaurant at 1428 E. High St., owned by local residents Marcia and Bruce Graham, pledged a portion of proceeds from its sales during the night would be donated in Shurr’s name to her Penny-A-Vote campaign to win the queen’s crown. Staff members behind the counter there “were the nicest people,” Roxanne Schurr said.

That’s where visitors found Gabby, too; behind the counter, working to wait on friends and others who turned out in support. “She really enjoyed herself,” her mother reported.
