Tweeting Away From Pottsgrove's Relay

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Mike Basile works in Philadelphia, handling computers for a Fortune 500 company. Frank Gilroy has daughters old enough to attend a prom, and thereby making him feel older still. Susan is an assistant cook who, on weekdays, helps feed the toughest cadre of food critics around: classes filled with middle school students. And Stacy Ann Sulima claims she’s “still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.”

What they had in common Saturday (May 30, 2009) were the Pottstown Relay For Life and cell phone access to Twitter, the popular Internet-based social network and short messaging application.

All four were among the thousands of walkers, volunteers and supporters who gathered inside the stadium at Pottsgrove High School, 1345 Kauffman Rd., to help raise money to benefit the American Cancer Society. As they did, all four used Twitter to shout out to the world – neighbors, friends, relatives and, ocassionally, complete strangers – what they were up to. Samples of their messages, known on Twitter as “tweets,” appear below, accompanied by the date and time each was sent.

For those unfamiliar with Twitter, the photos on the left are selected by tweeting authors to visually represent themselves online; these images are known as  ”avatars.” The identifier at the start of each message is the online name of the author; click it to be taken to pages filled with his or her tweets.  Web addresses (text that starts with “http://”  link to other websites or photos; click them to see pictures both Basile and Gilroy shared online.
