State Seeks Money For Storage Tanks

Pennsylvania wants to eliminate more of these headaches.

HARRISBURG PA – Pennsylvania has asked the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for $6.1 million in economic stimulus money to clean up 71 leaking underground gas and oil storage tanks in 40 counties, the state said in a press release Wednesday (July 1, 2009). Three sites are in Montgomery County, but none within the Lower Pottsgrove, Limerick or Pottstown areas; two are in Chester County; and one in Berks County.

The amount is the most the state can ask for under this part of the stimulus program. Affected tanks are those where responsible parties either are not known, or are unwilling or unable to do remediation themselves, the announcement indicated.

Pennsylvania first began regulating underground storage tanks in 1989. It estimated it spends between $1 million and $2 million annually on tank clean-ups. Most of the money for that work comes from gasoline sales taxes saved in what is known as the Underground Storage Tank Indemnification Fund.

Tri-County area tank clean-ups targeted to benefit from the money, if approved by the EPA, are Glemser Bros., Horsham; OJP Auto Service Inc., Norristown; and Center Square Citgo, Whitpain, all in Montgomery County; Gappa, East Pikeland; and Tim Brown’s Auto, Sadsbury, both Chester County; and Saint Lawrence Citgo, St, Lawrence, Berks County.
