HARRISBURG PA – Six Montgomery County organizations, but none within Lower Pottsgrove or Limerick (PA) Townships or Pottstown Borough, were among 73 statewide that received grants for projects aimed at fighting under-age alcohol use, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PCLB) announced Wednesday (July 8, 2009).

The PLCB says sales were up last year.
The state agency that controls liquor sales said it awarded more than $729,000 in grants to community, education and law enforcement groups to support “proven methods to prevent underage drinking.”
On the same day, PLCB also reported that sales at its “Wine & Spirits” stores reached a record $1.84 billion in the just-ended 2008-2009 fiscal year, generating more than $494.5 million in sales tax, liquor tax and profits for the state. “We are fortunate that sales … continue to rise, even as the economy slows,” its chairman said.
Within the county, grant recipients were the Norristown Area School District, $2,850, and Gwynedd-Mercy College, $11,235, both for survey and data collection projects; police departments in North Wales Borough, $11,452, Plymouth Township, $11,410, and Upper Dublin, $9,996, for enforcement activities; and Rosemont College, $11,111, for enforcement, assessments, and a “social norms campaign.”
