WASHINGTON DC – Lower Pottsgrove’s congressman, Rep. Charlie Dent (15th Dist.), says he favors paying certain senior citizens $250 each from unobligated federal stimulus funding to make up for a cost-of-living adjustment that the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced it will not make during 2010.
Dent said Thursday (Oct. 15, 2009) he was co-sponsoring House Bill 3691, the Seniors and Veterans Economic Stimulus Act of 2009, that would make payments to Social Security recipients and veterans on disability. The act must pass the House; a companion bill must pass the Senate; and the bill must be signed into law by President Obama before payments could be made.
SSA this week announced that, because the cost of living – as measured by the Consumer Price Index – declined this year as a result of the recession, there would be no increase or adjustment in Social Security next year.
Money for the added payments would come from stimulus funds that have already been borrowed but have not yet been spent.
