Building Codes Adoption (Again) Set Dec. 17

SANATOGA PA – Once every three years, Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township re-states the obvious to builders, contractors and remodelers: it abides by nationally accepted building codes.

It will say it again Dec. 17 (2009; Thursday).

The 2009 editions of the International Building Codes.

The township Board of Commissioners unanimously agreed Monday (Dec. 7) to advertise its intent to adopt new laws that set minimum requirements for:

  • design, construction, or removal of residential buildings (the Residential Building Code);
  • design, construction or removal of all other buildings (Building Code);
  • property safety and sanitation (Property Maintenance Code);
  • installation or removal of plumbing (Plumbing Code), mechanical (Mechanical Code), fuel and gas (Fuel Gas Code), and energy conservation (Energy Conservation Code) systems; and
  • regulation of fire safety (Fire Code).

The township doesn’t produce the requirements itself, Manager Rodney Hawthone noted. Instead, he said, it relies on codes written and published by the International Code Council (ICC), an association dedicated to building safety and fire prevention. The ICC updates its codes annually; Lower Pottsgrove will use the 2009 ICC code editions to set its new base standards.

Township Director of Codes and Zoning Officer Keith A. Place is responsible for their enforcement.

A public hearing on the codes’ adoption was set for the board’s second December meeting at 7 p.m. in the municipal building, 2199 Buchert Rd., Pottstown PA.

Advertisements announcing the hearing were published Tuesday (Dec. 8) in The (Pottstown PA) Mercury, the township’s newspaper of record for legal notices. The ads themselves took up more than 110 column inches on The Mercury’s classified pages and, to put that expense in context, cost the township about as much as buying a good stove, refrigerator and dishwasher for a modern kitchen.

Commissioners Bruce Foltz and Stephen Klotz were absent from Monday’s meeting and did not vote.
