Keeping What's Natural In Talks For Park

Meadow and woodland make up a significant portion of Snell and Norton Park, as seen during August 2009. The cooling towers of the Limerick Generating Station, to the southeast, are at right.

SANATOGA PA – An apparently growing public consensus for the future use of Lower Pottsgrove‘s Snell and Norton Park, on the township’s northeast side, is to improve what’s there and possibly exclude what’s not.

“There’s interest in enhancing the park’s natural features, but limiting the amount of active recreation,” township Assistant Manager Alyson Elliott told the Board of Commissioners during its Monday (Dec. 7, 2009) meeting. That translates to creating nature areas and walking trails, and not ball fields, according to some who attended initial discussions on the park’s use.

The 30-acre park currently consists of wooded land and open space, with access available from Shire Drive, Rivendell Lane, Rockwood Court, and Snell Road.

Commissioners agreed during September (2009) to spend up to $59,900 to have a master plan for the park’s combined parcels drawn up by landscape architects Simone Collins of Berwyn PA. Residents of neighborhoods surrounding the park so far have attended two meetings on the project. Others are scheduled for:

  • Jan. 26 (2010; Tuesday);
  • March 9 (2010; Tuesday);
  • April 6 (2010; Tuesday); and
  • June 1 (2010; Tuesday).

all at 6:30 p.m. in the municipal building, 2199 Buchert Rd., Pottstown PA.

Elliott also reported the township Parks and Recreation Board did not meet in December due to lack of a quorum.

    I did not attend the last meeting as I was at my daughters college for a sow she was in.

    I thought that this piece of ground would be great for a circular bike/walk path providing fairly level ground for people to walk / bike. A couple of roofed shelters for storms and sunshade, a couple of water fountains. An area set aside for leased gardens allowing folks to garden and grow vegetables, do composting of leaves provided by township pickups. Residents could lease a plot for a nominal fee and agreements for a yearly growing season.

    The access routes from the surrounding roads be set with small parking areas and bollarded walkways allowing pedestrian, bikes, carriages to pass but no vehicles except for a locked controlled emergency accessway.

    Those are my thoughts.
