Stuff To Do This Weekend

SANATOGA PA – Weekend activities for western Montgomery County residents (and anyone else!), Dec. 11-13, 2009:

The Phoenix sculpture, under construction for weeks in Phoenixville, goes up in flames Saturday during the Firebird Festival. See below.

Friday, Dec. 11

A gallery exhibit titled “Members and Friends Showing of Small-Priced Works,” which features – you guessed it – small-priced art in a variety of media, is being presented through Jan. 6 (2010; Wednesday) to observe the first-year anniversary of Studio B, 39 E. Philadelphia Ave., Boyertown PA. The Studio B gallery is open Fridays from 5-7 p.m., and Saturdays from Noon to 3 p.m.

Annual Holiday Spectacular activities in downtown Pottstown borough, sponsored by the Pottstown Downtown Improvement District Authority, continue from 6-9 p.m. with visits to Santa House, featuring a chance for children to visit with Santa and give him their wish lists. Pictures with Santa cost $6 this year. There are also horse and carriage rides for $5, free gingerbread cookie decorating for children under age 12, and roasted chestnuts and apple cider will be available.

Up for a challenge? The Amity Chess Club meets from 7-10 p.m. at St. Paul’s UCC Church, 1312 Old Swede Rd., Douglassville PA, for chess matches and lessons at all ages and skill levels. For more information, call 610-385-6324.

Playing in Pottstown.

Tickets are $23 for adults, $21 for seniors age 65 and older or students, and $15 for children age 12 and younger. Tickets can be purchased at the theater’s website, and at the door as available. The farm, owned by Al and Catherine Renzi, breeds and raises Nubian goats, with occasional genetic crosses, that are selected for their naturally nutrient rich milk. Their goods will be available for tasting and sale. (This event from AroundPhoenixville.com)

Phoenixville’s sixth annual Firebird Festival has evolved to become a day-long celebration. Its arts- and music-related activities this year begin at 2:30 p.m. and stretch well into the night. See a full schedule here. The festival’s premier event is lighting – make that “setting on fire” – a wooden sculpture of a mythical Phoenix bird for which the borough is named, and which was to have risen from its own ashes. The sculpture has been built over several weeks in a cleared area just south of the busy downtown district. The actual lighting of the bird will begin at 8 p.m. (This event from AroundPhoenixville.com)

Hundreds of luminary candles will line the towpath of the Schuylkill Canal from the bridge on Route 29 in Mont Clare PA back to the Locktender’s House at Lock 60 on the canal from 6-9 p.m. Holiday music will be played by Meadowlark, and Santa Claus will greet children from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The Schuylkill Canal Association, and sponsors Fitzwater Station and PECO Energy, will serve holiday treats and hot cider in the house. The lighted path will be canceled only if there is a steady downpour of rain.

Sunday, Dec. 13

Participants from Montgomery County Community College’s Jazz Improvisation Workshop will perform at 1 p.m. in the Science Center Theater, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell PA. Free of charge and open to the public, the concert will feature two ensembles with a diverse mix of standards, modern jazz arrangements and holiday songs adapted to the jazz idiom.

The Historic Pottstown Neighborhood Association will again sponsor its annual holiday house tour, called “Historic Pottstown by Candlelight,” from 1-6 p.m. at several homes throughout the borough. The event showcases some of Pottstown’s architectural wonders, both inside and out. 20091205-WorcesterPA-WentzCandlelight (6Edit)

Snowfall Set The Scene During Wentz Tour

PRETTY AND WHITE FOR THE HOLIDAYS – Visitors during Saturday’s (Dec. 5, 2009) Candlelight Tour at Peter Wentz Farmstead, the Montgomery County historic site in Worcester PA, had the realism of their Christmas trip back in time enhanced by the first snowfall of the winter. Although it made driving to the restored 18th Century Pennsylvania Dutch farm tricky from Sanatoga and Limerick, it also helped the candles along a walking path to the site gleam and glisten. See more photos below, and in a gallery here.

Temperatures dropped enough so that Colonial soldiers, standing guard outside the farmhouse in a Valley Forge-like encampment, gathered around an open fire for warmth. The cold also sent a young lamb scurrying for the warm and stomach-filling comfort of its mother’s milk.

And as the snow accumulated atop the leaves and berries of a nearby holly tree, Wentz Farmstead volunteer Rich Poole kept watch outside the farm fence and greeted guests as they entered the gates.

Santa Spent Suppertime In Sanatoga

THE GUY IN RED LOVES TOMATO SAUCE – Santa Claus paid a visit Saturday evening (Dec. 5, 2009) to the Sanatoga Fire Company, as its volunteers served up a fund-raising spaghetti dinner for the Jolly Elf and members of the public. Kennedy, left, and Madison Albright sat on Santa’s lap, above, before dinner and told him what they’d like as Christmas gifts. Then everyone trooped into the fire hall for a pasta and meatballs meal. 20091209-BuildingCodes-ICC

Building Codes Adoption (Again) Set Dec. 17

SANATOGA PA – Once every three years, Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township re-states the obvious to builders, contractors and remodelers: it abides by nationally accepted building codes.

It will say it again Dec. 17 (2009; Thursday).

The 2009 editions of the International Building Codes.

The township Board of Commissioners unanimously agreed Monday (Dec. 7) to advertise its intent to adopt new laws that set minimum requirements for:

  • design, construction, or removal of residential buildings (the Residential Building Code);
  • design, construction or removal of all other buildings (Building Code);
  • property safety and sanitation (Property Maintenance Code);
  • installation or removal of plumbing (Plumbing Code), mechanical (Mechanical Code), fuel and gas (Fuel Gas Code), and energy conservation (Energy Conservation Code) systems; and
  • regulation of fire safety (Fire Code).

The township doesn’t produce the requirements itself, Manager Rodney Hawthone noted. Instead, he said, it relies on codes written and published by the International Code Council (ICC), an association dedicated to building safety and fire prevention. The ICC updates its codes annually; Lower Pottsgrove will use the 2009 ICC code editions to set its new base standards.

Township Director of Codes and Zoning Officer Keith A. Place is responsible for their enforcement.

A public hearing on the codes’ adoption was set for the board’s second December meeting at 7 p.m. in the municipal building, 2199 Buchert Rd., Pottstown PA.

Advertisements announcing the hearing were published Tuesday (Dec. 8) in The (Pottstown PA) Mercury, the township’s newspaper of record for legal notices. The ads themselves took up more than 110 column inches on The Mercury’s classified pages and, to put that expense in context, cost the township about as much as buying a good stove, refrigerator and dishwasher for a modern kitchen.

Commissioners Bruce Foltz and Stephen Klotz were absent from Monday’s meeting and did not vote.

20090821-SnellNortonParks-Zlomek (4)Edit

Keeping What's Natural In Talks For Park

Meadow and woodland make up a significant portion of Snell and Norton Park, as seen during August 2009. The cooling towers of the Limerick Generating Station, to the southeast, are at right.

SANATOGA PA – An apparently growing public consensus for the future use of Lower Pottsgrove‘s Snell and Norton Park, on the township’s northeast side, is to improve what’s there and possibly exclude what’s not.

“There’s interest in enhancing the park’s natural features, but limiting the amount of active recreation,” township Assistant Manager Alyson Elliott told the Board of Commissioners during its Monday (Dec. 7, 2009) meeting. That translates to creating nature areas and walking trails, and not ball fields, according to some who attended initial discussions on the park’s use.

The 30-acre park currently consists of wooded land and open space, with access available from Shire Drive, Rivendell Lane, Rockwood Court, and Snell Road.

Commissioners agreed during September (2009) to spend up to $59,900 to have a master plan for the park’s combined parcels drawn up by landscape architects Simone Collins of Berwyn PA. Residents of neighborhoods surrounding the park so far have attended two meetings on the project. Others are scheduled for:

  • Jan. 26 (2010; Tuesday);
  • March 9 (2010; Tuesday);
  • April 6 (2010; Tuesday); and
  • June 1 (2010; Tuesday).

all at 6:30 p.m. in the municipal building, 2199 Buchert Rd., Pottstown PA.

Elliott also reported the township Parks and Recreation Board did not meet in December due to lack of a quorum.

20091208-PromotionalSign-Sunnybrook

Sunnybrook Displays Vision Of A New Sign

SANATOGA PA – Whenever money becomes available, directors at Sanatoga’s Sunnybrook Ballroom have a promotional sign ready to spend it on, the Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township Board of Commissioners was assured Monday night (Dec. 7, 2009).

A proposed sign for Sunnybrook commissioners seemed to favor Monday.

Sunnybrook board of directors’ member J. Wilmer “Wil” Hallman showed commissioners designs, created earlier this year, of a prototype sign to replace an aging billboard on East High Street that currently is used to promote events at the ballroom, 50 Sunnybrook Rd., Pottstown PA. The new sign features a computer-programmable, internally-lighted message board that would need township Zoning Hearing Board approval.

It needs funding, too.

Montgomery County has indicated it still has an $80,000 grant to help pay for the sign, money the commissioners rejected in July (2009) because they didn’t like and couldn’t change grant requirements. Commissioners Jonathan Spadt and James Phillips have been working with county officials on a compromise in the contract that makes Lower Pottsgrove responsible for both the sign and the grant’s use.

Sunnybrook still wants the sign, Hallman repeated Monday.

He and Sunnybrook President Thomas Sephakis expressed concern, during the commissioners’ first December meeting, that the grant may disappear when the county closes its 2009 financial books unless the township specifically states its support for the sign. The county “is looking for some kind of response by the end of the year,” Sephakis said.

Commissioners liked one of the two prototypes Hallman displayed, and agreed that, “generally speaking, you have that support,” Spadt said. But commissioners held off on a formal motion to that effect “until we’ve had a little more time to talk,” Spadt added.

If the grant money, which Sunnybrook first applied for during 2008, ever arrives, Hallman and Sephakis also said they hope the commissioners will let the Zoning Hearing Board know they endorse the project. That’s possible too, Spadt said.

20091207-DarpaBalloons-Guardian

Mo Never Had Chance At 40 Grand

POTTSTOWN PA – In a battle Saturday (Dec. 5, 2009) over $40,000 in prize money, Pottstown resident Maureen Gallant and thousands of others squared off against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Sadly for Gallant and the accompanying horde, the MIT team left them empty-handed.

A Boston-based university known for its scientific prowess, MIT took only hours to claim victory and the cash award in a contest devised by the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). During October, DARPA invited groups and individuals to successfully locate 10 large red weather balloons that had been hidden at secret locations around the country.

The balloons that had thousands of people on the lookout.

The contest was intended as an experiment to discover how the internet could help with rapid problem solving, so the defense agency made just one demand: competitors had to rely on the ‘Net and social networks to discover the balloons’ hiding places.

DARPA expected the competition, which officially launched Saturday, to take nine days. It ended in less than one. Poor Mo – as Gallant is known to her friends and blog readers – never had a chance.

Gallant works for a Lower Pottsgrove chiropractor, lives in the Owen J. Roberts School District, and in her spare time writes “Pottstown’s Blog.” It’s a conversational website she uses to voice her opinions and those of her readers on hot topics of the day. In a Friday (Dec. 4) blog post titled “I’m a Darpa Hunter,” Gallant announced she had registered and would compete for the prize.

“(Ten) balloons shouldn’t be that hard to track across the U.S., should they?,” she rhetorically asked at the time.

Turns out, it wasn’t hard at all for the MIT team. The Guardian, a British newspaper, reported MIT “created a viral campaign to encourage people to put forward information they gleaned about the locations.” It paid for submitted tips that panned out, and also offered “a scheme of incentives aimed at getting people to urge their friends to take part,” The Guardian said.

The eight-foot balloons were found in nine states: Arizona, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

Gallant acknowledges she wasn’t as organized as MIT, which was helped in its attempt by Facebook pages and Twitter accounts. In the end, Mo said in a Monday (Dec. 7, 2009) follow-up blog post, “I didn’t even look.”

DARPA claimed it learned a thing or two that could come in handy in future threats faced by the United States. It can be proud, too, that it’s “baby” has matured so quickly. That would be the internet itself, which began 40 years ago as a secure means for military communications, called ARPAnet.

20091206-PottstownPA-PottsgroveBanquetBingo (8Edit)

Bingo Players Vie For Banquet Baskets

GAMES RAISE FUNDS TO HONOR FOOTBALL TEAM – Bingo players of all ages gathered Sunday (Dec. 6, 2009) in the cafeteria at Pottsgrove High School to both enjoy their favorite game of chance and help raise money to honor the Falcon’s championship varsity football team. The fund-raiser, conducted by the Falcon Football Club, benefits the team’s upcoming awards banquet. See other photos from the games here.

As balls flew around the caller’s machine, and players dutifully daubbed their cards with ink to mark numbers already selected, they competed for prizes that included Longaberger baskets filled with themed items and Silpada jewelry.
