Notebook Worthy

SANATOGA PA – Recent jottings from a reporter’s notebook:

Curious Health Care Vignette Of The Week

Standing in the cold rain Sunday (Jan. 17, 2010) at 11 a.m., on the west side of Porter Road at the bottom of the rear driveway to Pottstown Memorial Medical Center, were three PMMC employees shielded by sky blue- and gold-colored umbrellas … taking their cigarette breaks.

Best Confession Of The Week

Offered by North Coventry PA resident, real estate agent, and avid Tweeter Joe Sheehan, broadcasting to the world from his Twitter user account Saturday (Jan. 16) at 10 p.m.: “I put a bag of Reese’s PB (peanut butter) cups too close to the cooling fan of my laptop and now they’re all melted.”

This Is Where Intensity Starts

People who attend only varsity high school sporting events, arguing that competitors at the junior varsity or lower levels can’t match the intensity of their older counterparts, simply don’t know what they’re talking about.

The Post was witness Saturday (Jan. 16) to several hard-fought matches during the Phoenixville (PA) Middle School Wrestling Tournament. Athletes from Pottsgrove, Pottstown, Spring-Ford, Owen J. Roberts, Boyertown and several other middle schools were there. One match between two particularly tough opponents went the distance and was decided by a single point. The losing wrestler, who earlier told his teammates he was “nervous but ready” for his bout, was so disappointed he cried for several minutes after the match ended.

An assistant coach did his best to console and calm him. “You wrestled well,” the coach explained; “you’ll beat them next time.” “I let the team down,” the wrestler mumbled. “You’ll let the team down,” the coach responded, “only if you don’t wrestle next time like you did this time.” And the young man smiled, ever so slightly.

Pity the next guy who faces him. He’ll be focused and probably even more intense – assuming that’s possible – if only to justify that coach’s confidence.

Observing MLK Day

Today (Monday, Jan. 18) is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Most schools are closed. Most students have the day off. To ensure they know why, take them to a local ceremony that honors the legacy of Dr. King:

  • The Second Baptist Church of Pottstown will hold its annual Martin Luther King Day service today at 10 a.m. at the church, 507 N. Adams St., Pottstown PA. The Rev. Charles Walker of Philadelphia is the featured speaker, and the Pine Forge Academy Choir will perform.
  • From Noon to 1 p.m., an ecumenical service memorializing Dr. King will be held in Bomberger Chapel of Ursinus College, Main Street, Collegeville PA. It will be followed hours later, at 6 p.m., with a candlelight vigil walk from Ursinus’ Olin Hall to its Bomberger Auditorium.
  • Also today, at 2:30 p.m., the Rev. Georgiana Harris and youth group members of Pottstown’s Victory Christian Life Center will present a series of essays about Dr. King and his work in the nation’s civil rights movement to residents of ManorCare Health Services, 724 Charlotte St., Pottstown PA.

What They Sold For

What They Sold For

They paid how much?

They paid how much?

POTTSTOWN PA – Not a single property within Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township made the list of top prices paid for real estate during the period of Sept. 27-Oct. 23, 2009, as reported Sunday (Jan. 17, 2010) by the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper.

This week’s top reported prices were dominated by entries from Chester County townships, which have not been included in The Inquirer for several months. Its list, called “The Top 50,” is the newspaper’s weekly review of highest prices paid for real estate sold within the city of Philadelphia and townships in its surrounding counties.

By contrast, during the same period, the top real estate sales price in Pottstown PA Borough, immediately to the west was $152,000; Limerick PA Township, east, $395,000; New Hanover PA Township, northeast, $330,686; Upper Pottsgrove PA Township, west, $265,000; and in North Coventry PA Township, south, none listed.
