New State Budget Proposes Education Increase

The state's proposed budget for next year was unveiled Tuesday.

HARRISBURG PA – Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell proposed a 2010-2011 state budget increase of $354 million in public school funding, The Pennsylvania Independent online news service reported Tuesday (Feb. 9, 2010). The increase is part of more than $11 billion allocated in the proposed budget for various education services, The Independent said.

Rendell’s budget unveiling Tuesday morning at the Capital preceded adoption of the Pottsgrove School District’s 2010-2011 preliminary budget later that evening. Like other districts across Pennsylvania, Pottsgrove relies on state funding to supplement its spending plan but also is burdened by state mandates that increase the cost of local education.

The overall general fund budget introduced by Rendell amounts to $29 billion; represents a 4.1-percent increase in spending over 2009-2010, and depends upon reeiving $2.7 billion in federal stimulus money, according to The Independent.

The news service published a package of three budget-related stories:

  • Funding For Schools Increases by $354 Million
Governor Ed Rendell has proposed over $11 billion of taxpayer funding for various education services in his 2010-2011 budget proposal which he announced Tuesday morning.
  • “Financial Tsunami” headed for PA, Gov. Says
During his annual budget address, Gov. Rendell warned the approaching withdrawal of federal tax dollars being funneled to states by the Obama Administration will mean $2.3 billion will disappear from state coffers in Fiscal Year 2011-12. The following year, taxpayers will be on the hook for $5.6 billion to cover shortfalls in public employee pension plans. Rendell called it a “fiscal tsunami.”
  • 2010-2011 State Budget Unveiled
Changes to the state sales tax system and funds from the federal government will be necessary to keep Pennsylvania’s budget balanced, said Governor Ed Rendell on Tuesday in his final budget address.
