Entertaining Pottsgrove's Color Day Crowd

POTTSTOWN PA – The rock band “Stand On Saturn” kept Pottsgrove High School students entertained Jan. 29 (2010; Friday) during the school’s annual Color Day, its end-of-mid-terms break, with a filmed performance that was posted Feb. 4 (2010; Thursday) to YouTube, the popular video sharing website.

The 3m46s video showing the band in concert is hosted at the YouTube user account of Courtneydaniels1.

High school teacher John Shantz later joined a group on stage for a rousing rendition of  “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” by heavy metal rock band Metallica. A 5m50s video of that performance was posted Jan. 29 at the YouTube user account of a7xmetalhead713.

Music wasn’t the only thing that kept the students interested. Earlier in the day they decorated the gym at the high school, 1345 Kauffman Rd., Pottstown PA, with colorful class banners they created themselves. See the assortment below:

20100211-SnowBlowerSign-HomeDepot

Notebook Worthy

Seen Thursday (Feb. 11, 2010) in the windows of Home Depot, Armand Hammer Boulevard, Pottstown PA. When the weather's bad, sometimes business can be good ... until the inventory runs out.

SANATOGA PA – Recent jottings from a reporter’s notebook:

Trend-Spotting

One subscriber to The Sanatoga Post‘s daily headlines e-mail, who receives it at work, programmed her e-mail box to issue an automatic reply Friday (Feb. 12, 2010) to all incoming messages. It read, in part:

“Due to the snow storm, (the office) has been closed for the last two days. I am busy shoveling out, so I will be out of the office again. I will not be checking email and voice mail.”

There’s a new trend for ‘ya; snowfall as a way to unplug.

For No Advance Warning, They Look Good

One hazard of being a public figure – and usually there is no more public a figure than an elected official – is that you may be asked to have your photo taken at a moment’s notice. That’s what happened Jan. 26 (2010; Tuesday), just before the start of the Pottsgrove School District Board of School Directors’ meeting. A student needed the board’s photo for a project, and directors did their best to seem happy about the opportunity.

They even have great smiles, despite the fact that the first of last week’s two blizzards was just beginning to rage outside.

The assembled multitude, from left, consists of Scott Fulmer, Fred Remelius, Jodi Adams, Michael Neiffer, Nancy Landes, Philip Keogh, Patricia Grimm, April Kontostathis, and Robert Lindgren.

Coming Soon, Or So The Signs Say

“Bliss,” which dubs itself as an “eco-friendly salon” – one assumes that means it will use natural hair care products and techniques – has announced by a sign outside that it will occupy space in the former school house at the corner of East High Street and Sunnybrook Road in Sanatoga PA. The building formerly served as home to an interior furnishings retailer.

“Goose’s Tobacco Outlet and Cafe,” which dubs itself as a “Super Montecristo cigar lounge” – Montecristo is a premium cigar brand name – also has announced by a sign outside that it will occupy space in the Sunset Center plaza at 250 W. Ridge Pike in Limerick PA.

No date has been given for either debut.

Welcome The New Mayor(s) Of Sanatoga …

If you’re a user of Twitter, the web-based social messaging network, you’re probably seeing an increase in Tweets that look something like these:

MKadash: I’m at Diamond Credit Union (1600 Medical Drive, Pottstown). http://4sq.com/bQFdf1

subewl: I’m at Walmart (Chester Valley Trail, Pottstown Pike, Exton). http://4sq.com/85tqU0

And like other Twitterers, you may have wondered, “Who are these people? Why do they constantly say where they are? And does anybody care?”

They do care, if – like the folks above – they enjoy playing a game known as FourSquare.

FourSquare is a mobile phone pass-time that allows players to proclaim where they are in the world, and receive points for being there. If they check in from the same location enough times, and accumulate sufficient points, FourSquare designates them as the “mayor” of that place. A block occupied by 10 different businesses might also have 10 different FourSquare mayors.

Players who visit the same place even more times, or who visit wholly different places to which the game may point, can unlock special “badges” that mark them as being FourSquare experts.

The game’s developers explain that as players use FourSquare to check-in, they “start learning more about the places” others frequent. It’s both a way to meet up with friends, and a way for businesses to attract new customers because the game makes them seem more popular or trendy. A growing number of businesses – many of them bars, restaurants and entertainment venues – are making special offers to their mayors; a free dessert with a dinner purchase, for example.

Those perks  put an awful lot of pressure on mayors to keep re-visiting their favorite haunts (checked by FourSquare using the GPS capabilities of a player’s cell phone). Miss a day, and they could lose their mayoral titles to a trespasser, like this one:

akaleirose: I just ousted @beejer as the mayor of Burger King – Pottstown on @foursquare! http://4sq.com/bylxF2

20100215-RooftopSnowClearing-Sanatoga

Just Call It 'Preventative Maintenance'

CLEARING SNOW FROM THE ROOF’S EDGE – Lower Pottsgrove Township residents Vince (on the ladder) and Zach (with the shovel) Markwith, of 1116 Kepler Rd., Pottstown PA, weren’t taking any chances with the weather Sunday afternoon (Feb. 14, 2010). They used tools to scrape snow from their home’s rooftop, helping to reduce some structural weight and also eliminate ice formations in gutters and beneath the eaves. They may have finished the job just in time, too. AccuWeather predicts another (but thankfully, smaller) snow storm will hit the Greater Philadelphia area tonight (Monday, Feb. 15) and Tuesday morning (Feb. 16), with the possibility to dump another 4 to 6 inches of white on western Montgomery County.

Walk Through These Rooms Without Moving

Walk Through These Rooms Without Moving

SANATOGA PA – Selling real estate in Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township went slightly higher tech last weekend.

An animated, three-dimensional video walk-through of a furnished, “deluxe, one-bedroom apartment” that doesn’t yet exist, but nonetheless is being advertised for sale at the Buchert Ridge Retirement Community on Buchert Road west of North Pleasant View Road in the township, was posted Feb. 5 (2010; Friday) on YouTube by architects for the project.

The video is not narrated, so don’t adjust your sound; there’s nothing to hear. To The Post’s knowledge, this is the first time this kind of animated video has been used as a residential new construction real estate sales tool in Lower Pottsgrove. They have been common elsewhere for years.

Buchert Ridge is a project of Sanatoga PA-based Wil Hallman Retirement Development.

  • The Blizzard Locally, As Seen On YouTube
In Pottstown, in Limerick, in Collegeville … almost everywhere, or so it seemed Wednesday, somebody had a video camera handy to record what was happening out in the snow.
  • Second Time ‘Round: Tweeting Up The Snowfall
Shovel? These folks don’t need no stinkin’ shovel! Instead, from anywhere within 10 miles of Pottstown between late Tuesday night and early this morning (Thursday), they stayed inside and chatted about the weather on Twitter.
  • Stuff To Do This Weekend
There are some fun activities that were scheduled for the weekend, and we haven’t received cancellation notices on any of them. Just to be sure, call before you go.
  • Emergency Dispatches For Feb. 10, 2010
Local and area emergencies that occurred between Wednesday at 6 a.m. and today (Thursday) at 6 a.m., to which Montgomery County (PA) dispatchers sent first-responder teams.
  • Dance And Dine Saturday At Sunnybrook
Figure the snow will be cleared by then. You’ll want to get out. Where better to go than a local Valentine’s Dance with a hopping band?
  • Tasting Session Benefits Sanatoga Fire Co.
A February fund-raiser allows you to taste some treats you can prepare at home, and buy the ingredients too. One-stop shopping!

Wednesday, Feb. 10

Monday, Feb. 8

AND THERE’S MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM – A North Pleasant View Road, Sanatoga PA, resident used a snowblower to clear his lengthy driveway Saturday (Feb. 6, 2010) at mid-day, but it’s likely that neither he or any of us are done with the white stuff yet. AccuWeather predicts up to 4 inches of snow could fall on our area Tuesday night, and another 4 to 8 inches may drop during the day Wednesday. Check out its forecast, below.
