Ringing Relocation Decision Possible In Two Weeks

POTTSTOWN PA – A decision on where to house Pottsgrove School District students now attending Ringing Rocks Elementary School, while their building is renovated and expanded, “is needed within the next two weeks” and could be made by the Board of School Directors on March 23 (2010), district Superintendent Dr. Bradley Landis said Tuesday (March 9, 2010).

Landis assured school board members, who gathered at Lower Pottsgrove Elementary School for their first of two monthly meetings, that the district continued to actively pursue two different options – leasing the St. Pius X High School, North Keim Street, Pottstown PA; and installing modular classrooms on the campus of Pottsgrove Middle School, North Hanover Street, Pottstown – for temporarily relocating Ringing Rocks students.

A decision is needed quickly, Landis said, so the district has adequate time to prepare either site.

Construction of an enlarged and improved Ringing Rocks building on Kauffman Road, Pottstown, is expected to begin this summer after the school year ends, and is anticipated to take more than a year to complete. A public discussion last month over where students will be educated in the interim attracted a large and vocal crowd, most of whom favored leasing the soon-to-be-vacated Pius building from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Pius students this fall will occupy the new Pope John Paul II High School being finished in Royersford PA.

Landis reported Tuesday that a team of district representatives again toured the Pius building during the past two weeks to determine how classrooms there could be best used if it emerged as the preferred option. The district also requested additional environmental and utility cost reports from the Archdiocese, he said.

The district also learned the vendor it likely will use to obtain modular classrooms, if that option is chosen, is already a state-approved contractor. The approval makes obtaining the modulars easier, if necessary, Landis said.

In a preliminary review Tuesday of the proposed district building and grounds budget for 2010-2011, directors acknowledged the cost of modulars had been added as a potential line item only to ensure a relocation expense was in some way reflected in financial planning for next year. Its inclusion “in no way reflects that any decision has been made,” district Director of Facilities and Physical Plants Michael Katzenmoyer said.
