Asbestos removal requires a whole host of precautions.
POTTSTOWN PA – Bids for removal of what Pottsgrove School District officials say is a relatively small amount of asbestos at Ringing Rocks Elementary School, 1401 Kauffman Rd., Pottstown PA, are being sought from “qualified contractors with at least three years’ experience” in such work, according to an advertisement that appeared Monday (March 15, 2010).
Its call for bidders was published in The (Pottstown PA) Mercury newspaper, the district’s publication of record for legal notices. The asbestos removal would be part of Ringing Rocks’ planned renovation and expansion.
Architects handling the Ringing Rocks project, Gilbert Architects Inc. of Lancaster PA, report there is a small amount of asbestos associated with pipe insulation and other structural materials inside the school, district Business Administrator David Nester recently said. Because inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to serious illnesses like cancer, and because construction work could loosen fibers that might be inhaled, specialized removal is necessary.
The district and Gilbert are relying on a consultant, JMSI Environmental Corp. of Swoyersville PA, for its help in choosing a responsible bidder.
Bids must be submitted by March 30 (2010; Tuesday). A meeting that must be attended by any company intending to bid is scheduled to be held today (Tuesday, March 16) at 4 p.m. in Ringing Rocks.
