SANATOGA PA – Recent jottings from a reporter’s notebook:
Take The Money And Run
As it does on occasion, Lower Pottsgrove sold another vehicle last Thursday (March 18, 2010) on Municibid, the national municipal auction website that was founded by former township resident Greg Berry. The vehicle – which the township no longer needed, didn’t want, and was happy to be rid of – was a 1975 Ford 2000 tractor.
The winning bidder, whose name was not announced as the township Board of Commissioners considered awarding the sale during its second meeting of the month, offered $2,251.
Commissioner James Phillips and board Vice President Bruce Foltz, sitting side-by-side at the municipal building’s conference room table, looked at the bid amount and smiled, simultaneously. They next looked at each other, still smiling.
“I’d take that before somebody changes their mind,” Phillips said.
“I was thinking the very same thing,” Foltz replied, and then turned to township Manager Rodney Hawthorne to ask, “When we get their check, we make sure it’s good, right?” Hawthorne nodded yes.
The bid was accepted, unanimously.
Take The Chair And Fix It
Lower Pottsgrove Planning Commission member William Wolfgang wasn’t sitting easily last Monday (March 15, 2010), despite the fact that he and fellow planners quickly breezed through their monthly agenda in only nine minutes. He rocked a bit, literally, in his chair. After the meeting ended, he tested a couple of other chairs. They were wobbly too.
“Would you mind,” he asked township Assistant Manager Alyson Elliott, “if I came in later this week and fixed a few of these chairs? I used to do it for a living, and know a little about taking care of them. I wouldn’t charge you,” he said. “Why, no,” a surprised Elliott responded. “We’d love to have you take a look at them.”
Wolfgang, good for his word, returned later in the week with a toolbox and some hardware. He spent a full hour in the conference room, Elliott reported to the Board of Commissioners, tightening what was loose, replacing what was missing, and straightening what was twisted. All as a volunteer, and just because it was something that needed doing and he had the talent to do it.
Appreciative commissioners have already issued their official letter of well-deserved thanks.
Take That Artwork And Hang It
James Enders‘ name may not be immediately recognizable to Borough of Pottstown residents, but he is among the pioneering artists who saw the potential of locating a gallery in Pottstown’s downtown well before the borough itself decided it should attract such folks. Enders’ Dada Art Galleries Inc. opened at 217 High St. in 2004, displaying pieces of his own but also exhibiting works by others he deemed important.
Enders has had a long history of success in local and regional shows, and also gained national attention, with pieces of bright (some might say “electric”) colors, whimsical subjects, and an abstract expressionist style.
Some of his recent works will go on display beginning this Friday (March 26, 2010) through May 7 in a show titled “Movable Feast” that will be held at the Boyer Gallery in The Hill School’s Center for the Arts, Beech and Sheridan streets, Pottstown PA. The Boyer Gallery is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays by appointment, but a special reception for the artist is scheduled Friday from 7-9 p.m.
