Emergency Dispatches For March 22, 2010

Emergency Dispatches For March 22, 2010

NORRISTOWN PA – Montgomery County (PA) emergency dispatchers directed police units, firefighters and emergency medical responders within the past 24 hours to a variety of incidents. A selective list of their activity appears below.

The entries are taken from publicly available feeds supplied by the county Department of Public Safety. Feed content has been edited by The Post for relevance to readers in Lower Pottsgrove and Limerick PA townships, the borough of Pottstown, and surrounding municipalities. It consequently is incomplete and is not intended to be comprehensive.

In most cases, the entries can be read as:

  1. Type of service (EMS = emergency medical services, Traffic = police, Fire = firefighters);
  2. Type of incident (vehicle accident, etc.)
  3. Location of incident (usually by closest intersection or landmark, and the name of the municipality)
  4. Date and time of the incident (YYYY-MM-DD) @ (“at”) (HH:MM:SS) in military time format.

Cluster Participates In National Fund Challenge

Cluster Participates In National Fund Challenge

POTTSTOWN PA – A nationwide, two-month-long fund-raising project that allows the Pottstown Cluster of Religious Communities and more than 2,000 similar agencies to share a million dollars that benefits hungry families in their communities is being conducted during March and April.

Donations to the cluster during the period enable it to participate in a funding match provided by the Feinstein Foundation, founded by philanthropist and humanitarian Alan Shawn Feinstein, according to cluster Executive Director Barbara Wilhelmy.

Giving cash, checks and food items to the Cluster Outreach Center, 137 Walnut St., Pottstown PA, lets it “share in the giveaway that will be divided proportionately among all agencies participating,” Wilhelmy said. The outreach center is the cluster’s primary site for food, clothing and emergency assistance distribution.

The cluster represents a consortium of area churches and religious groups that have been organized to provide emergency food, clothing, household goods, financial assistance, and social services guidance in the greater Pottstown area for more than 40 years. The center also serves five meals weekly at various sites through its community meals program. During 2009, the center served 9,700 individuals from its food pantry, and offered more than 18,000 meals.

For more information on donations to the cluster’s efforts in the foundation’s “One Million Dollar Challenge,” visit the cluster website.

Elvis Meets Bill During This Weekend's Production

Pottsgrove Middle School cast members sing and dance their way through rehearsals for ...

POTTSTOWN PA – It’s the weekend that Elvis channels Shakespeare in the Pottsgrove School District.

Students and faculty members at Pottsgrove Middle School will present what’s known as a jukebox musical, titled “All Shook Up,” nightly beginning Thursday (March 25, 2010) though Saturday (March 27) at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium, 1351 N. Hanover St., Pottstown PA. The description is apt, says musical director Carole Bean, because all of its songs were previously released numbers made popular by recording artist Elvis Presley.

It involves one other big name too: fabled playwright William Shakespeare, on whose play, “Twelfth Night” (and lines from a few others) the musical’s plot is based. The combination makes for evenings of fun, even literate, entertainment, according to director Tom Yenchick.

Tickets will be available at the door for each performance, priced at $8 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens.

Cast in the production are Rebecca Smith as Natalie Haller, Justin Hernandez as Chad, Josh Toth as Jim Haller, Shayna Flint as Sylvia, Danielle Buchanan as Lorraine, TJ Galamba as Dennis, Brianna Petitti as Miss Sandra, Andrea Paganelli as Mayor Matilda Hyde, Trevor Noll as Dean Hyde, Brandon Tait Sheriff Earl, Nick Wolfe as Warden, Abby Hudock as Aphrodite, Courtney Weaver as Artemis, Caitlyn Lear as Athena, and Emily Weaver as Aurora and Henrietta.

... their upcoming production of "All Shook Up."

Featured dancers are Danielle Gambino, Caitlin Lear, Shelby Poston, Courtney Weaver, and Emily Weaver. Townspeople include Aslan Berbaum, Kerry Brennan, Joshua Crocetto, Chris Delvecchio, Audrey Eiland, Danielle Gambino, Clara Harding, Hailey Jacobs, Shelby Poston, Caroline Remelius, Kristi Shultz, Allison Wentzel, Lyndsay Ware, Hannah Windrim, and Nick Wolfe.

In addition to Yenchick as director and Bean as musical director, Cherie Fithian serves as choreographer, and Caitlyn Toth is the high school student assistant.

Kids Donate Books To Family Center In Sanatoga

Kiwanis Kids Club members and leaders show off some of the more than 1,100 books donated to the Pottstown Family Center.

SANATOGA PA – More than 1,100 books collected by the Kiwanis Kids Club, a student-led community service group at West Vincent Elementary School in the Owen J. Roberts School District, have been donated to the Sanatoga PA-based Pottstown Family Center for use in its Parents As Teachers program and its toy and book lending library.

The books were gathered during a recent drive conducted by the club, and presented to center Director Jenn Brown earlier this month. Thanks to the club’s generosity, Brown said, “our families can share in the gift of reading with their young children. These books will be a wonderful addition.”

The center’s Parents As Teachers program assists parents in their child’s development, and encourages activities to promote healthy growth.  The lending library is open to families who are enrolled in center programs, and features children’s books and activity toys, as well as parent resource books.

Operated by Family Services of Montgomery County, the center was opened in 1993 and currently is located at 1976 E. High St., Pottstown PA. For more information, call 610-326-1610.

Gallery School's Centerpiece Event Due In April

Gallery School's Centerpiece Event Due In April

POTTSTOWN PA – Fashion clothing from retailers at the Philadelphia Premium Outlets in Limerick PA, coupled with music provided by Magical Sight and Sound, will be the focus of the fourth annual Fashion Plates fund-raiser scheduled April 11 from 1-4 p.m. at Brookside Country Club in Pottstown to benefit the non-profit Gallery School of Pottstown.

Titled “An Afternoon in Paris,” the event has become the centerpiece of our fund-raising for the year,” said gallery director Cathy Paretti.

Brookside’s menu for the event consists of food with a Parisian flair, she said, including a selection of fruits, cheeses, and breads, along with a signature Parisian Punch during cocktail hour. The luncheon features quiche lorraine, vegetable quiche, spinach and feta in filo, coconut chicken, an assortment of croissant sandwiches and plum tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil on crusty bread. Dessert offerings include fruit crepes.

The purchase of a Fashion Plates ticket also gives buyers an opportunity to bid on a copy of a Marvel Comics’ “Models Inc.” first issue, autographed by television celebrity Tim Gunn. Gunn donated a copy of the comic book, in which he appears, with an inscription asking Gallery friends to “Make Fashion Plates work!” The comic comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Original artwork, pottery and jewelry will also be available to bidders, and Gallery School member Sandra Nestlerod-Hale will be painting original watercolors on site that will be available for a donation of $20.

Tickets for Fashion Plates are $60 and can be purchased at the Gallery on High, High Street, Pottstown PA; online, or by phone at (610) 326-2506.

20100322-ElleMacpherson-JamesEnders

Notebook Worthy

"Elle Macpherson," a 3-foot-by-4-foot mixed media work by artist James Enders. See "Take That Artwork And Hang It," below.

SANATOGA PA – Recent jottings from a reporter’s notebook:

Take The Money And Run

As it does on occasion, Lower Pottsgrove sold another vehicle last Thursday (March 18, 2010) on Municibid, the national municipal auction website that was founded by former township resident Greg Berry. The vehicle – which the township no longer needed, didn’t want, and was happy to be rid of – was a 1975 Ford 2000 tractor.

The winning bidder, whose name was not announced as the township Board of Commissioners considered awarding the sale during its second meeting of the month, offered $2,251.

Commissioner James Phillips and board Vice President Bruce Foltz, sitting side-by-side at the municipal building’s conference room table, looked at the bid amount and smiled, simultaneously. They next looked at each other, still smiling.

“I’d take that before somebody changes their mind,” Phillips said.

“I was thinking the very same thing,” Foltz replied, and then turned to township Manager Rodney Hawthorne to ask, “When we get their check, we make sure it’s good, right?” Hawthorne nodded yes.

The bid was accepted, unanimously.

Take The Chair And Fix It

Lower Pottsgrove Planning Commission member William Wolfgang wasn’t sitting easily last Monday (March 15, 2010), despite the fact that he and fellow planners quickly breezed through their monthly agenda in only nine minutes. He rocked a bit, literally, in his chair. After the meeting ended, he tested a couple of other chairs. They were wobbly too.

“Would you mind,” he asked township Assistant Manager Alyson Elliott, “if I came in later this week and fixed a few of these chairs? I used to do it for a living, and know a little about taking care of them. I wouldn’t charge you,” he said. “Why, no,” a surprised Elliott responded. “We’d love to have you take a look at them.”

Wolfgang, good for his word, returned later in the week with a toolbox and some hardware. He spent a full hour in the conference room, Elliott reported to the Board of Commissioners, tightening what was loose, replacing what was missing, and straightening what was twisted. All as a volunteer, and just because it was something that needed doing and he had the talent to do it.

Appreciative commissioners have already issued their official letter of well-deserved thanks.

Take That Artwork And Hang It

James Enders‘ name may not be immediately recognizable to Borough of Pottstown residents, but he is among the pioneering artists who saw the potential of locating a gallery in Pottstown’s downtown well before the borough itself decided it should attract such folks. Enders’ Dada Art Galleries Inc. opened at 217 High St. in 2004, displaying pieces of his own but also exhibiting works by others he deemed important.

Enders has had a long history of success in local and regional shows, and also gained national attention, with pieces of bright (some might say “electric”) colors, whimsical subjects, and an abstract expressionist style.

Some of his recent works will go on display beginning this Friday (March 26, 2010) through May 7 in a show titled “Movable Feast” that will be held at the Boyer Gallery in The Hill School’s Center for the Arts, Beech and Sheridan streets, Pottstown PA. The Boyer Gallery is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays by appointment, but a special reception for the artist is scheduled Friday from 7-9 p.m.

Stop by, say hi, and get an eyeful.
