Notebook Worthy

SANATOGA PA – Recent jotting’s from a reporter’s notebook:

Filling The Cinematic Void

New kid on the block.

Ever since last October, when Hollywood Video closed up shop in Sanatoga Village Plaza, Lower Pottsgrove residents have had a diminishing number of places to visit from which they could rent movies on DVD. The list grew by one on Monday (March 15, 2010), however, when a new Blockbuster Express DVD rental kiosk was installed in the entrance lobby of Sanatoga Thriftway, 2190 E. High St., Pottstown PA.

The cost, $1 per movie per night.

The township’s other supermarket movie alternative, by the way, is a Redbox kiosk at Redner’s Warehouse Market, in the North End Shopping Center, 1300 N. Charlotte St., Pottstown. Also $1 per flick per night.

Lost In The Crabgrass

With all the “big picture” issues in the world that most Americans worry about – the recession, the availability of health care, and whether nagging plot twists in the television drama “Lost” will be untangled by its last episode – we tend to lose sight of little things.

Things like crabgrass.

Fortunately, the Montgomery County Cooperative Extension office has our backs. The Collegeville PA-based agency distributed an e-mail Wednesday (March 17, 2010), which helpfully reminded property-owning recipients that crabgrass is poised to invade their otherwise lush and green lawns.

“Remember all that crabgrass in your lawn last summer?,” the e-mail asks. “You can prevent it this year, but you need to act soon.  Crabgrass begins to germinate when the temperature in the upper inch of soil reaches 55 to 58°F at daybreak for 4 to 5 days. Normally, pre-emergence crabgrass treatment in Southeastern Pennsylvania should take place between March 15 and April 15.”

The e-mail also included a fact sheet titled “Control of Summer Annual Grass Weeds in Turfgrasses.”

So a tip of the hat to the Cooperative Extension folks, for sending an electronic communication that actually informs rather than sells. Now, if they could only suggest ways we can schedule lawn work between those remaining broadcasts of “Lost” …

What Were They Thinking?

In annual observance yesterday of St. Patrick’s Day – a day of peace, of hope, of all things green, and of wishes for Irish good luck – Da Vinci’s Pub, 217 E. Main St., Collegeville PA, offered a special $5 liquid refreshment it called an “Irish Car Bomb.”

The Census Is Here. You Count

Across Lower Pottsgrove, Limerick, Pottstown and elsewhere in the state and nation, postal carriers on Tuesday (March 16, 2010) delivered United States’ 2010 Census forms to residents.

To ensure municipalities receive their fair shares of federal and state money for popular programs, many of which are funded proportionate to the number of people living there, it’s important to ensure the Census accurately reflects the size of local populations.

So to put something back in your pocket later, be counted. Put your response to the Census into the mail today.

Zoning, Subdivision Laws On Township's Agenda

Zoning, Subdivision Laws On Township's Agenda

POTTSTOWN PA – Action to advertise for and schedule a public hearing on re-enactment of Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township‘s zoning, subdivision and land development ordinances is likely to be a topic of discussion during tonight’s (Thursday, March 18, 2010) township Board of Commissioners‘ meeting at 7 in the municipal building, 2199 Buchert Rd., Pottstown PA.

Township Solicitor R. Kurtz Holloway earlier this week said the board would move quickly once it received a recommendation from the township Planning Commission to approve the re-enactment. Planners gave their official OK on Monday (March 15) during their regular monthly meeting, which Holloway attended.

The renewal of such laws represents a reaction by Lower Pottsgrove and other municipalities to earlier judicial rulings elsewhere that demanded they be able to prove during litigation that their rules were correctly adopted and documented, according to township Assistant Manager Alyson Elliott.

Whatever other business the board intends to conduct is unknown. A commissioners’ meeting agenda was not available online as of 6 a.m. today. If published before the meeting, the agenda usually can be found on the township website, here.

Teachers' Union Decides To Say Nothing, For Now

Teachers' Union Decides To Say Nothing, For Now

POTTSTOWN PA – The union representing Pottsgrove School District teachers and other employees has determined that, for now, the best way to respond to remarks made last week by district Board of School Directors President Michael Neiffer is to say nothing publicly.

Pottsgrove Federation of Teachers (PFT) President Tom Yenchick, when asked for an update on the outcome of a membership meeting held Monday (March 15, 2010), via e-mail said only that “the union has no comment to make at this juncture.”

The PFT executive committee and representative council long ago had scheduled a regular monthly gathering for Monday in Lower Pottsgrove Elementary School, Buchert Road, Pottstown PA. That session took on added significance, however, after Neiffer – during the directors’ March 9 meeting – publicly suggested teachers and all other district employees agree to a one-year wage freeze or be prepared to endure job cuts to trim the 2010-2011 district budget.

Determining how, if at all, the union would reply to what some viewed as a threat was said to be on the PFT meeting agenda.

Teachers and other sources who willingly talked with The Post last week about the then-impending meeting, albeit without being identified, also declined to discuss the mood, tenor or substance of the union’s discussions Monday.

A Study In Concentration

THAT HAD TO BE A GREAT BOOK! – It was a bit hectic last Tuesday (March 9, 2010) in the cafeteria of Lower Pottsgrove Elementary School, Buchert Road, Pottstown PA. Pottsgrove School District officials were presenting spending plans for next year, school board members were lamenting the state of their budget, and an audience packed with teachers, parents and students came to watch children participate in a educational demonstration. In the middle of all that hub-bub sat this young reader, transfixed by the story on pages before him. He refused to be distracted, and in the space of 20 minutes looked up only twice. Briefly.

20100309-LpTwpPA-PottsgroveReadingOlympics (6Edit)

These Olympians Jumping Into The Printed Word

Teacher Linda Rendina, standing, awaits an answer last week as Reading Olympians assembled on the floor in Lower Pottsgrove Elementary School ponder her question.

POTTSTOWN PA – A group of students from across the Pottsgrove School District are preparing for a spring Olympiad that tests the strength of their minds, not their muscles.

Several students in Pottsgrove’s three elementary, and its middle and high schools, will again challenge others on their book knowledge during May, in this year’s edition of the Reading Olympics. The competition is sponsored by the Norristown PA-based Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU) – a consortium of the county’s school districts – and the county’s libraries.

Rather than view the event as a competition, teachers Linda Rendina and Elaine Armstrong told the district Board of School Directors last week (March 9, 2010) during its meeting at Lower Pottsgrove Elementary School on Buchert Road, students are encouraged to see it as a celebration of all things read-able.

“The idea,” Rendina explained, “is to get them not only to read more, but to understand more of what they read.”

An MCIU committee annually creates and distributes several lists of books to be read by Olympic hopefuls during the course of the school year. Some are popular and “fun” reads, and some are an acquired taste, the teachers admit. All are deemed worthwhile and of educational merit. Each participant must read a minimum of five listed books.

Once they’ve plowed through their choices, the students form teams which are quizzed on their knowledge of the books’ characters, locations, plots, and meanings. Rendina and Armstrong brought two such teams with them to last Tuesday’s school board meeting, and provided a five-minute demonstration of how they operate.

Think of it as a literary “Family Feud:” a moderator-posed question is followed by 20 seconds of whispering and head-shaking, and ends with a group-selected spokesperson who offers the consensus answer. Cheers and points go to the group that gets it right, and a “we’ll do better next time” attitude emerges from the one that missed.

The night’s two teams, by the way, ended in a tie.

Pottsgrove’s Reading Olympians this year benefited from a $1,000 grant provided by the Pottsgrove Educational Foundation. The gift helped teachers buy books for their participants, and pay the associated Olympic entry fees, costs that otherwise would have been borne by families who may not have been able to afford them. “It’s truly a community effort now,” Armstrong said.

It's MontCo's Turn For ChemSweep Program

ChemSweep pays for programs to help deal with messes like this.

HARRISBURG PA – Montgomery County will be among 21 Pennsylvania counties to participate this summer in ChemSweep, a program that helps pay for the safe and easy disposal of unwanted pesticides, and which is funded by the registration fees of pesticide manufacturers and applicators, according to state Agriculture Department Secretary Russell Redding.

The program is rotated among different counties annually. It began in 1983, and to date has helped Pennsylvanians dispose of more than 1.8 million pounds of pesticides, Redding said last week (March 11, 2010).

Prime beneficiaries are pesticide applicators themselves, who are eligible to participate in ChemSweep by submitting an application form before June 15. ChemSweep covers disposal costs for up to 2,000 pounds of chemicals per accepted applicant. An independent contractor hired by the Agriculture Department will collect and package all waste pesticides for incineration at facilities approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

However, ChemSweep also pays for hazardous or toxic waste disposal programs for Pennsylvania homeowners.  Several are scheduled within participating counties on future dates. For more information, call 800-346-4242.
