  • Board Cuts Budget More, But Keeps After-School Busing
Pottsgrove school directors Tuesday acknowledged the district probably won’t get much, if any, of an additional $309,000 in operating funds it was earlier promised by the state. So they made cuts and found more revenue ahead of the anticipated bad news.
  • Pottsgrove Authorizes Pius Lease For Ringing Relocation
When a deal is done, and it’s not yet, Superintendent Dr. Bradley Landis can sign it, the Pottsgrove Board of School Directors agreed Tuesday. That means displaced Ringing Rocks students likely will be housed next year on North Keim Street, and not in modular classrooms at the middle school campus.
  • Engineers Claim PA Roads Worse Now Than In 2006
Despite pouring $600 million into road repairs from federal stimulus projects, like that of U.S. Route 422, an engineering group claims the state’s roads have deteriorated from four years ago.
  • 422 Concrete Patching Continues Though Today
In addition to the now-usual delays and lane changes on U.S. Route 422 that accompany its reconstruction, crews will be doing some additional patching around the Trooper interchange. Beware.

Tuesday, May 25

  • Township Declares Fallen Light Pole A Hazard
After 30 days, Lower Pottsgrove can act to remove a toppling pole on North Charlotte Street that commissioners fear could injure someone walking by. Getting reimbursed by the property’s owner, though, won’t be easy.
  • Call Goes Out For Ringing Rocks Construction Bids
The Pottsgrove School District asked contractors to bid on portions of the school rebuilding project only 12 hours after its preliminary plan was approved by Lower Pottsgrove Township. Pretty fast for government work; here’s why.
  • Lower Pottsgrove’s Reviled System Generates Reverent Talk
It’s the municipal service everyone needs and no one wants to pay for. It’s also a Holy Grail worth pursuing if the township is to grow as expected.

Monday, May 24

  • Plans Ready For 422 Emergency When Bridge Closes
(With Video) The East High Street bridge crossing Sanatoga Creek near Cutillo’s Restaurant will close in mid-June for repairs. All but local traffic will be detoured over U.S. Route 422. But what happens if it’s closed too? Lower Pottsgrove’s emergency management team has planned for the possibility.
  • Community Band Strikes It Up In Season Opener
(With Video) Music filled the air Sunday at Pottsgrove High School, as the Pottsgrove Community Band took to the auditorium stage for its first concert of this season. Watch and hear two different numbers.
  • Sunnybrook Plans Summer Blues Fest July 10
(With Video) The ballroom’s first of what is hoped to become an annual blues festival has been scheduled for mid-summer, with 10 different acts performing both inside and outside during the day.
  • Talented Pottsgrove Musician Performing In Philadelphia
Pottsgrove junior Linda Numagami’s decision, in third grade, to take up the viola and abandon the violin has shaped her musical destiny. She’ll be among orchestral performers at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center in two weeks.
  • School Sports June Physicals Available in Pottsgrove
Middle and high school athletes can’t compete during 2010-2011 without a physician’s examination.

Club Revive's Sunday Party A Casting Call

Unhappy with the 'rents? Time to swap 'em.

PHOENIXVILLE PA – Revive, the organization that began as a 21-and-younger night club two years ago in Sanatoga, has again been tapped by producers of a national television show titled “The World’s Strictest Parents” to help cast teen stars for its second season. Auditions will be held Sunday (May 30, 2010) from 7:30 p.m. to midnight at Club 212, 212 Bridge St., Phoenixville PA, where Revive now operates.

“The World’s Strictest Parents” airs on both MTV and CMT. The auditions coincide with Revive’s Summer Nights Beach Bash event.

Teens between ages 15 and 17 who “consider themselves rebellious, are tired of their parents’ rules and restrictions, and want to know what it would be like living with really strict parents” are being encouraged to audition, Revive owners Cary and Sandra McGuckin said Wednesday (May 26) in a press release. “This is an opportunity for teens to go live with another family and trade in their parents for a new set for almost an entire week,” the couple added.

Ironically, parental approval is needed for teenagers to participate.

The show’s executive producer, Nick Emmerson, said his casting team is “looking for teenagers from every type of background who are ready to participate in a social experiment, exploring the world of the 21st century teenager matched against contemporary parenting styles.”

Particularly wanted, Emmerson said, are teens with unique interests; technically savvy teens; hippies; urbanites; slobs; surfers; affluent teens; liberals; defiant teens; and teens who have ordinary or extraordinary circumstances.

In addition to the show’s auditions, the Revive event is being hosted by radio personality London from Wired 96.5, and DJ Smoke. It also features a guest appearance by Jackie, one of the stars from “World’s Strictest” Season One, and offers give-aways and free tastings from Vegas Fuel Energy Drink. The event is geared to high schoolers only, ages 14-19; none other will be admitted. Admission costs $15.

Gather Up The Posts' Freshest Eggs … On Facebook

It's taken two years, but The Post's Facebook page has launched.

SANATOGA PA – In the world of so-called news-making proclamations, the arrival of yet another business-related Facebook page is no earth-shaker. So there’s little expectation of public “hallelujah” as The Post announces that its long-overdue contribution to the hot social media platform officially opened Thursday afternoon (May 28, 2010).

Readers may be surprised, however, at how we plan to use Facebook. We’re going to deposit fresh Easter eggs there on weekdays.

Easter eggs are a computer programmer’s term for virtual surprises – we intend them to be only good ones – that reward or give something extra to users. In a video game, for example, an Easter egg might be a hint to help players jump to another level.

Our fresh eggs on Facebook often will be exclusive or additional content related to stories carried in The Post itself. Maybe it’s an extra video from a school concert, or a larger gallery of photos from an event, or just observations of life in Lower Pottsgrove, Limerick, Pottstown, and from along the U.S. Route 422 corridor that are fun and interesting but don’t rise to the level of “news items.”

After all, we figure, why bother to make an effort to visit Facebook if you can’t get something new from the experience?

We’ll also link to local photos, stories, videos or features published elsewhere we think our readers will find enjoyable and informative.

As elsewhere, The Post’s Facebook page is open to visitor comments, discussion, “likes,” and everything else that makes Facebook an interesting place to be. We welcome you to join us there.

Hospital Presents Annual Awards To EMTs

POTTSTOWN PA – Kevin Yerger of Goodwill Ambulance, Pottstown PA, and Bill Reice of Trappe Ambulance, Trappe PA, have been chosen by Pottstown Memorial Medical Center as its 2010 Local EMS Hero Award recipients, after being nominated by their peers, the hospital announced during National Emergency Medical Service Week.

Award presenters and recipients, from left: Richard McLaughlin, PMMC Emergency Department medical director; award winner Kevin Yerger, Goodwill Ambulance; and John J. Kirby, hospital CEO. Award winner Bill Reice, Trappe Ambulance, was unavailable for the photo.

Yerger was nominated for his commitment to Goodwill and the patients he attends. Those submitting his name described him as “a great person” with “top notch skills,” and someone who is “extremely compassionate and has a way of making the patient feel safe,” according to a PMMC spokesperson.

Reice’s nomination described him as a “team player: always pleasant, friendly and, most importantly, one who genuinely cares about his patients.”

The award is annually presented to emergency medical technicians (EMT) who go above and beyond their duties and who exemplify what it means to be an EMT.

Teens' Author Visits Pottsgrove Middle School

Jordan Sonnenblick.

POTTTOWN PA – Award-winning author Jordan Sonnenblick, whose novel “Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie” was chosen for the American Library Association’s Teens’ Top Ten list of 2005, was a featured speaker Tuesday (May 25, 2010) to students at Pottsgrove Middle School, North Hanover Street, Pottstown PA, principal Dr. William Ziegler reported.

Middle school librarian Shelby Kqira helped coordinate Sonnenblick’s visit, as part of the building’s “One School, One Book” literacy initiative. “Drums” was its focus. In the story, protagonist Steven has a totally normal life.  He plays the drums, has a crush on the hottest girl in school and is constantly annoyed by his brother. But when his brother gets sick, Steven’s world is turned upside down.

“Drums” also was chosen to be part of the “Go the Distance” literacy initiative, which is a collaboration between Muhammad Ali and Scholastic Publishing.

Since his debut, Sonnenblick has written six more books for teens.
