Board OKs Ringing Rocks' Preliminary Plans

Board OKs Ringing Rocks' Preliminary Plans

SANATOGA PA – Plans to rebuild and expand Ringing Rocks Elementary School have been in front of the Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township Planning Commission so often, and by now are so well-known, that the Pottsgrove School District‘s engineering representative on Monday night (May 17, 2010) smiled, shrugged, and asked commission members, “Want me to go though this again?”

Ringing Rocks Elementary School's east facade.

For the most part, they did not.

The commission, during its monthly meeting in the municipal building, quickly, unanimously, and without comment approved a preliminary land development plan for reconstruction of the school, 1401 Kauffman Rd., Pottstown PA. Commissioner Nicholas Hiriak was absent and did not vote.

The plan now moves on to the township Board of Commissioners for its review and potential approval Thursday (May 20).

Kevin McAghon of Landmark Engineering told the planning board the district had received appropriate approvals or recommendations from the state Department of Environmental Protection, the Montgomery County Conservation District, and the Pottstown Water and Sewer Authority regarding portions of the Ringing plans they control or that affect their operations. Minor plan changes, supervised by township engineers, were being made as a result, he said.

The district also has finalized its plans for steep slope changes on the Ringing property, McAghon said, which were the subject of a conditional use hearing by the township board that was left open as a cost-saving convenience. They also will be presented to commissioners Thursday.

The district still must seek a variety of zoning variances to enable construction to proceed by the start of summer. Landmark outlined those in three separate letters mailed between February and April; their contents are being consolidated into a single letter covering all variance needs to be considered by the township Zoning Hearing Board.

Notebook Worthy

Stuff sometimes happens.

SANATOGA PA – Recent jottings from a reporter’s notebook:

Ooops! Another One Proofreaders Missed

Pottsgrove school board member Philip Keogh stopped a Post reporter last week before the board meeting began, smiled, and asked, “What’s today’s date?” “May 11,” came the reply, and it was indeed May 11 (2010) at the time. Sadly, Keogh pointed out, a Post story published that same morning in one sentence incorrectly announced the school directors were meeting May 18 … a week later.

This mea culpa is offered in recognition of the fact that ours and other publications occasionally make mistakes. Quality control is a goal, here and elsewhere, but it’s not always the end result. If you read an error in The Post, drop us a note by e-mail, send us a direct Tweet or, like Keogh, let us know personally. Accuracy really is important.

Which brings us to a proofreading oversight in a different publication, the bi-annual brochure titled “Emergency Planning for the Limerick Area,” distributed this month by Exelon Nuclear to residents within a 10-mile radius of the company’s Limerick Generating Station. It provides safety information on which the public can act if an incident at the power plant allowed radioactive steam to escape.

On one of the brochure’s pages, the company lists radio stations that would broadcast official information and instructions in case of such an emergency. Among AM stations in Montgomery County still listed by Exelon is “WPAZ 1370.” Unfortunately the Pottstown PA station went silent and out of business in December 2009, when owner Great Scott Broadcasting pulled its plug atop Maugers Mill Road.

We can empathize.

In With The New

A tenant apparently has been found for the former Lakeside Inn restaurant and Dylan’s Pub property at 594 W. Ridge Pike., Limerick PA. Lakeside went out of business in August 2009, and got a boat-load of bad press because it left some wedding plans in the lurch.

A vinyl sign covering up the Lakeside name now reports that a new restaurant, called The Copperfield Inn, will be “coming soon,” and offers a phone number to contact for more information about scheduling weddings, receptions and other affairs.

Brief. Interesting. History.

Remembering Pottstown.

Many books about history lack punch, or zest, or the excitement that makes other writing – a mystery novel, or an edgy thriller, for example – must reads. It’s not that history itself is boring; too often, it’s just boringly written.

“Remembering Pottstown: Historic Tales from a Pennsylvania Borough” succeeds in taking an entirely different, and far more entertaining, approach to telling local history.

Author Michael Snyder, a retired teacher who also is president of the Pottstown Historical Society, has written “Remembering Pottstown” as a series of illustrated topical vignettes of usually no more than four pages. He focuses on small slices of life in the borough and the Pottsgroves, with segments like “Hometown People Who Made Good,” and “Pottstown Man Shoots His Wife, Gets Shocking Experience.”

Readers can literally start his book anywhere, read a short piece, put it down, and then repeat the process days later without feeling they missed something.

“Remembering Pottstown” was published in March (2010) by The History Press Inc. of Charleston SC, and Snyder launched a small book tour last month with a signing event at the Pottstown Public Library.

Not Your Usual Medical Referral

Changes in physicians’ practices, changes in medical insurance reimbursements, and coming changes prompted by federal law means a slowly and quietly growing number of doctors are deciding not to accept Medicaid payments from patients they serve. Medicaid is a government program most often relied upon by the poor and others who can’t afford to pay for their medical expenses.

Those folks still need medical attention, even if the doctors they’ve been with for years choose to no longer care for them. So a few physicians have begun referring these former patients to one office that willingly accepts both new patients and Medicaid: Community Health and Dental Care (CHDC), 11 Robinson St., Pottstown PA.

CHDC as recently as last week (May 9, 2010) advertised that it was offering fee discounts for income-eligible individuals and families. It’s trying to provide timely services for the clientèle, too. Its doctors are already scheduling school physicals in advance of the need in September.

Western Center Looks To Buy Law Training Gear

WCTS students demonstrate their lessons in protective services classes.

LIMERICK PA – Protective services education at the Western Center for Technical Studies, which serves students in the Pottsgrove, Spring-Ford and Upper Perkiomen school districts, could soon become a whole lot more interactive.

The center’s governing Joint Operating Committee last week (May 10, 2010) said it would seek sealed bids to buy from a selected vendor “a Law Enforcement Training System and Interactive Driving Simulator” for the current school year, according to an advertisement that appeared in The (Pottstown PA) Mercury newspaper, the center’s publication of record for legal notices.

Students who enroll in the protective services program often go on to become emergency medical technicians, firefighters, private investigators, security consultants, security team members, and police, fire, and ambulance dispatchers.

Pottsgrove’s representatives on the committee are Scott Fulmer, vice-chairperson; Philip Keogh Jr., secretary; and April Kontostathis. All three also are members of the Pottsgrove School District Board of School Directors.

Bid openings are set for today (May 17) at 1:05 p.m. in the business office of the center, 77 Graterford Rd., Limerick PA. The committee can accept or reject any or all portions of any bid submitted, the legal notice stated.

Tappin' Toes With The Middle School Jazz Band

Tappin' Toes With The Middle School Jazz Band

POTTSTOWN PA – Most jazz bands are limited to only a dozen or so players. Not at the Pottsgrove Middle School, director Kathy Williams noted Thursday night (May 13, 2010). More than 30 students said they wanted to participate this year, and every one of them got the chance.

Williams explained to an audience in the auditorium at the school, on North Hanover Street, Pottstown PA, that if students were willing to attend practice at 7:30 a.m. on a school day, she’d be the last to deny them the opportunity. The appreciative crowd burst into applause.

The Jazz Band joined the Middle School concert band and its wind ensemble in performances during the school’s annual spring concert. Later tonight (Friday, May 14) in the middle school cafeteria, vocal ensembles, soloists and the Jazz Band will participate in the Middle School Cabaret. It begins at 7 p.m.

Blog: Lower Pottsgrove Has Fewest Tax-Exempt Parcels

POTTSTOWN PA – Slightly more than 1 percent of the total number of parcels in Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township claim tax-exempt status, as opposed to those in Upper Pottsgrove Township (also above 1 percent), West Pottsgrove Township (above 2 percent) and the borough of Pottstown (above 3 percent), according to research posted Tuesday (May 11, 2010) on the Pottstown blog Code Blue Pulse.

Blog authors reported their information came from a Montgomery County government public source, but the article did not provide a link to the data.

Its figures specifically state that of Lower Pottsgrove’s 4,569 parcels, 65 (1.4 percent) are tax exempt; Upper Pottsgrove, 40 (1.7 percent) of 2,338; West Pottsgrove, 45 (2.7 percent) of 1,653; and Pottstown, 283 (3.2 percent) of 8,648. Percentage calculations were created by The Post for purposes of ease in comparison.

The article was said to be a follow-up on the Monday (May 10, 2010) report of another blog, Save Pottstown!!, which cited 2006 data that showed 50 churches – most or all of them presumed to be tax-exempt – were located in the 19464 zip code.
