Still Time To Plan For National Night Out

Still Time To Plan For National Night Out

The National Night Out Knight, official mascot of the activities.

WYNNEWOOD PA – More than 140 Pennsylvania municipalities and organizations – including those in Phoenixville Borough, Pottstown Borough, Royersford Borough, and Spring City Borough – have registered their intent with the National Association of Town Watch to participate in the 27th annual National Night Out (NNO) program being held across most of the country on Aug. 3 (2010; Tuesday), according to National Project Coordinator Matt Peskin.

It’s not too late for other local communities and groups to get in on the act, either.

Any municipality, law enforcement agency, crime prevention organization, community group or neighborhood that wants to join in the activities can contact the association to receive information on the 2010 edition of NNO for everywhere except the state of Texas, which will observe the event on Oct. 5. There is no cost to register.  For registration materials, call 1-800-NITE OUT; or visit the National Night Out website.

National Night Out is intended to:

  • Heighten crime prevention awareness;
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
  • Send a message to criminals, letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Once registered with NATW, based in Wynnewood PA, local coordinators receive an organizational kit full of ‘how-to’ materials, including planning suggestions, sample news releases, artwork, promotional guides, and interim updates.

NNO during 2009 involved more than 36 million people in 14,625 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. National Night Out 2010 is expected to be the largest ever, and again this year the Target retail store chain is a national corporate sponsor.

Along with traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, many cities and towns observe National Night Out with a variety of special citywide and neighborhood events. They include block parties, cookouts, parades, festivals, visits from local officials and law enforcement, safety fairs, and youth events. Organizing in most communities begins early in the year.

Editor’s Note: The Post is interested in helping to promote all National Night Out activities within its coverage areas. If your community or group has events planned, let us know by e-mail, and we’ll promise to get the word out.

Bikers Ride From Pottstown Against Kidney Disease

Bikers Ride From Pottstown Against Kidney Disease

POTTSTOWN PA – Motorcycles growled. Kids played. The hungry ate … well. And the National Kidney Foundation benefited from it all Sunday (June 13, 2010), as employees of the Renal Care Center at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center and other volunteers staged the second annual Kidney Ride and Fun Day between Pottstown and Oaks PA.

The “ride” portion of the event took dozens of bikers from the parking lots at PMMC and out on a 35-mile country road drive to Black Rock Park in Oaks. That’s where the day’s remaining activities – food, games, prizes, and education about kidney diseases – took over.

20100612-SanatogaPA-StrawberryFestHisSoc-GIsett (29)

A Berry Beautiful Day For Historical Society

The object of everyone's affections Saturday (June 12, 2010): strawberries.

SANATOGA PA – Succulent strawberries – fresh, sweet, just-picked, and perfectly ripe for eating – were the stars Saturday (June 12, 2010) as the Lower Pottsgrove Historical Society served hundreds of people during its annual Strawberry Festival on the grounds of Sanatoga Chapel, 2431 E. High St., Pottstown PA. With ice cream or without, in cakes and pies or just by itself, the bright red fruit helped raise funds for the society’s projects and brought back the best memories of local summers gone by.

The society was helped in its efforts by an army of volunteers; the assistance of Blast From The Past Street Rods Inc., which brough several classic and muscle cars to display; musical entertainment by the O’Such Rhythm and Music Trio, and the Pottsgrove High School Show Choir; and guest celebrity Bobby Shantz, Sanatoga’s claim to fame in Major League Baseball.

Bobby Shantz was on hand to autograph baseball memorabilia.

Was there plenty of food? You bet, everything from BBQ sandwiches ...

... to hot dogs, grilled to flavorful perfection ...

... to baked goods that tempted those not seduced by strawberries.

Blast From The Past's classic cars filled the chapel's yard ...

.. and provided a scenic background for patrons.

Kids fished for foam in a swimming pool ...

... while guests were entertained outside by the O'Such Trio ...

... and inside by the Pottsgrove High School Show Choir.

PACA Concerts Trumpet Borough Arts Scene

PACA Concerts Trumpet Borough Arts Scene

POTTSTOWN PA – This Sunday’s (June 13, 2010) second installment in the free-to-the-public  summer music series presented by the Pottstown Arts and Cultural Alliance (PACA) offers chances to hear some great ’70s rock, as well as to learn more about the borough’s growing arts and culture scene, says PACA’s Mike Holliday.

The band “2nd Childhood” from Gilbertsville will be featured when the concert opens at 2 p.m. in Riverfront Park, College Drive, Pottstown PA. Ample parking is available at the nearby West campus of Montgomery County Community College, and the band will play from a stage facing the park’s lush grassy amphitheater. Visitors should feel free to bring lawn chairs, blankets to lie on, and something to eat while enjoying the show, Holliday adds.

The concert series, which runs monthly from May through September (except during July), is being used by PACA to advance a vision of what its blog describes as “a cultural district in downtown Pottstown that will increase cultural tourism, and awareness of the social and educational importance of the arts.”

The group points to nearby municipalities like Phoenixville and Manayunk as proof that a vibrant arts and culture climate can also be an economic engine. PACA hopes to duplicate those successes locally.

PACA’s membership currently includes:

Pottsgrove 2011 Itinerary Includes Spain, Italy, China

Pottsgrove 2011 Itinerary Includes Spain, Italy, China

A few will need this.

A few will need this.

POTTSTOWN PA – Airlines are scheduling more flights, travel is in vogue again, and education never goes out of style. Put the three together and, in the Pottsgrove School District, it generates an itinerary any travel agent might envy.

Beginning in July, and continuing through next June, 14 different student excursions have been authorized by the district Board of School Directors. For all but two, noted below, all expenses are paid by participating students, Superintendent Dr. Bradley Landis said.

Several are to sports-related camps. Several others involve the Pottsgrove High School chapter of Delta Epsilon Chi (DECA), an international association of students interested in marketing careers. A few more exotic locales offer cultural value.

Authorization of such travel is an exercise that appears annually on the meeting agenda of the district Board of School Directors. It unanimously approved these future jaunts during the board’s May 25 meeting in the administration building, Kauffman Road, Pottstown PA. The destinations, listed in dated order with destinations in bold type, are:

  • Gettysburg PA, July 31-Aug. 4, 2010. Boys Soccer camp at Gettysburg College; cost $350 per person.
  • Preston Park PA, Aug. 22-27, 2010. Football camp at Camp Wayne; cost $220 per person.
  • Elverson PA, Aug. 26-28, 2010. Boys and girls cross-country camp at French Creek State Park; cost $20 per student, paid from the team’s account.
  • Scranton PA, Oct. 7-9, 2010. Middle School student government to PASC state conference, cost $100 per student.
  • Washington DC, Nov. 12-14, 2010. DECA Southern and North Atlantic Regional Conference, $300 per student.
  • Hershey PA, Feb. 23-25, 2011. DECA state career trip; cost $250 per person.
  • Italy, April 12-21, 2011. Cost $2,914 per person.
  • Champion PA, April 13-16, 2011. Technology Student Association State Conference at Seven Springs Resort, $500 per student.
  • Wallops Island VA, April 17-20, 2011. Advanced Biology Trip; cost $350 per person.
  • Orlando FL, April 29-May 4, 2011. DECA International Trip, about $1,000 per student, paid for by the district. When questioned by board members on this item, Landis noted that for all other trips DECA members conduct fund-raising. This particular trip involved a limited number of students and was being treated the same as an athletic team traveling to competition in another state.
  • Orlando FL, May 31-June 4, 2011. Senior class trip; cost $1,064 per person.
  • China, June 18-July2, 2011. High school trip; $3,400 per person.
  • Spain, June 20-30, 2011. High school trip; cost $2,952 per person.
  • Kutztown PA, July 15-18, 2011. Girls basketball camp at Kutztown University; cost $300 per person.

Teachers Hired For Pottsgrove High Summer School

Teachers Hired For Pottsgrove High Summer School

POTTSTOWN PA – Twelve Pottsgrove High School teachers and substitutes have been hired by the school district Board of School Directors for the high school summer school program. Students pay tuition to attend, making the program self-supporting, Superintendent Dr. Bradley Landis said.

Hired at the contractual rate of $30.50 hourly were teachers Brad Burpee, Tom Stock, Lindsey Stock, Mary Launi, Heather Renn, Lambert Liebel, Jaime Reinhart, Christa McLaughlin, Jim Algeo, and Bill Hawthorne. Hired as substitutes were Audrey Dudley and Megan DeLena

School board members, during their May 25 (2010) meeting at the district administration offices, Kauffman Road, Pottstown PA, also authorized operation of the annual summer school program at Pottsgrove Middle School. Those classes will meet four hours daily, three days each week from July 6-29, Landis said.

SANATOGA PA – A non-profit group with offices in Sanatoga has singled out two area residents for their decades of dedication in delivering food to home-bound elderly and disabled individuals.

Joann Hunsicker and Anne Wells, both residents of Collegeville PA, have served as volunteer drivers for the Montgomery County Meals On Wheels program for 30 and 35 years, respectively, according to an announcement Wednesday (June 9, 2010) from Family Services of Montgomery County. The agency is headquartered in Eagleville and operates the program locally from offices at 1976 E. High St., Pottstown PA.

Hunsicker and Wells were honored during Family Services’ recent Meals on Wheels Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. Both make meal deliveries in the Lower Perkiomen Valley. “They have selflessly supplied their time and energy throughout the years, and we are truly grateful to have these women on our team,” said Alicia Adams, Meals On Wheels case manager.

Each weekday, Family Services provides two meals – a hot lunch and a cold supper to refrigerate – to an average of 160 individuals in Pottstown, Royersford and the Lower Perkiomen Valley. Volunteers personally deliver more than 81,000 meals a year.
