UPPER MERION PA – Supervisors in Upper Merion (PA) Township last week (July 22, 2010) voted unanimously to endorse the U.S. Route 422 master plan for land use and transportation study purposes, but pointedly noted they were not making a statement on tolling the highway, The (Norristown PA) Times-Herald newspaper reported Monday (July 26).
The plan affects several municipalities in Montgomery, Chester and Berks counties, and lays out a vision for greater efficiency in land use, more reliance on transportation alternatives like mass transit, and improvements to the 25-mile limited access road that runs between King of Prussia and Reading. It suggests that imposing tolls on 422 drivers could be one way to finance those improvements, but that issue is being studied separately.
As is so far known, three municipalities – Upper Merion, Limerick and East Vincent townships – have favored endorsement. Several others are likely to vote on an endorsement in coming weeks, including the Lower Pottsgrove Board of Commissioners.
