It's A Crumb-y Job, But Somebody's Got To Do It

The senator's taste buds get a workout.

CREAMERY PA – How does a Pennsylvania legislator, who knows he’s about to be photographed, sample a piece of bread without opening his mouth too wide or dropping white crumbs on his bright red shirt and still look happy about the entire process?

Very carefully, state Sen. John Rafferty can attest.

Rafferty – who represents Lower Pottsgrove and Limerick PA townships and the borough of Pottstown in the 44th state Senatorial district – was among a team of four bread judges Friday evening (Aug. 13, 2010). They were asked to render verdicts on the quality and tastiness of about a half-dozen home-baked loaves that comprised finalist entries in a “Breads Of The World” contest held at the annual Montgomery County 4-H Fair in Creamery PA.

Rafferty, who’s never without a smile, proved to be a master of the photo session. He successfully chewed, thought about the sample, and discussed texture, moistness (or lack thereof) and flavor with fellow judges while cameras clicked away in the Maple Room kitchen at the Cooperative Extension complex on Route 113, where the fair bustled with thousands of visitors over three days.

Choosing a winner was harder than having shutters snap in mid-munch, the judges agreed. They had difficulty separating winners from the also-rans; yes, Rafferty promised, most really were that good. A list of the finalists is expected to be made available later his week by the county Cooperative Extension office.

  • Featured Post: Apple Cake with Streusel Topping February 21, 2012
The recipe had me at streusel. Because I haven’t perfected frosting a cupcake, let alone a cake, a streusel is a good, probably even better alternative. Instead of buttercream or cream cheese frosting, I like topping cupcakes with streusel, which is a mixture of flour, butter, sugar and sometimes nuts. It forms a light, sweet, […]

  • Featured Post: Crispy Pork Buns February 21, 2012
The pork belly is prepared Filipino Style.  First, simmered with salt, bay leaves, garlic and onion, then deep fried over a low heat.  Right before serving, the pork belly is fried again at a higher heat – there is something truly magical when you’re left with the most tender pork belly and super crispy skin. […]

  • Featured Post: Chicken Tikka Masala February 16, 2012
Tikka Masala is a flavorful silky sauce with cream and tomatoes. Not too hot, but rich and creamy. What was remarkable was that it was much easier to make than I thought. And some gross pantry insufficiencies lead to wonderful discoveries in substitutions–which I now call essential ingredients!! […]

I hope you all enjoyed Valentine’s day in whatever fashion you chose to celebrate! My day was mostly spent tinkering around the house at a rate of zero productivity. It has never actually occurred to me to celebrate Valentine’s day in my adult life, mostly because I experience a generally adverse reaction to the idea […]
  • Featured Post: Grilled Plantains February 14, 2012
During the month of January, my wife and I did the Whole30 challenge. The challenge is very similar to our current diet, but without any dairy, white potatoes, white rice, or sweeteners like honey and maple syrup. I felt great all month, but I did struggle with maintaining my weight (I’m a pretty skinny guy). […]
