Friday, Aug. 27

A local business expo will be part of this weekend’s Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Community Festival, scheduled for today through Saturday (Aug. 28) at various times in and outside of the parish Education Center, Swamp Pike and Neiffer Road, Limerick PA. The three-day festival will feature amusement rides by Tons of Fun, live music and entertainment, bingo, children’s games, adult games of chance, raffles and a diverse menu of foods. Up for a challenge? The Amity Chess Club meets from 7-10 p.m. at St. Paul’s UCC Church, 1312 Old Swede Rd., Douglassville PA, for chess matches and lessons at all ages and skill levels. For more information, call 610-385-6324.

“Family Movie Night Under the Stars,” featuring the Disney Pixar animated feature “Up,” will be held Friday (Aug. 27, 2010) beginning at 8 p.m. in the grove at the Valley Forge Volunteer Fire Company, 630 Valley Park Rd., Valley Forge PA. Tickets cost $5 per adult, and $3 per child. Refreshments will be available. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets for seating.

The ’80s return during an adult dance and mixer scheduled Friday from 8-11 p.m. in Sunnybrook Ballroom, 50 Sunnybrook Rd., Sanatoga PA. A $5 admission fee will be charged at the door. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 484-624-5186.

Saturday, Aug. 28

The Phoenixville Farmers Market, located beneath the Gay Street bridge, Phoenixville PA, now runs weekly on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through November. The market can be reached from Taylors Alley.

The Skippack Farmers Market, located on the south side of Route 73, just east of its intersection with Route 113, Skippack PA, now runs weekly on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through September.

The Boyertown Farmers Market, located at 100 S. Walnut St., Boyertown PA, now runs weekly on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 30. All markets are rain or shine. The market occupies the parking lot of The Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles, two blocks south of the intersection of Routes 562 and 73.

Prana, a new holistic and wellness center, will conduct its grand opening observance Saturday (Aug. 28, 2010) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the center, at 19 Moser Rd., Pottstown PA. The event is open to the public. Among activities featured there during the day are mini-massages, informational sessions about yoga, reflexology, Reiki, aromatherapy, and food and door prizes.

An Education Day event sponsored by state Sen. Andy Dinniman, Rep. Paul Drucker, and the Concerned Parents of Phoenixville organization will be held Saturday (Aug. 28, 2010) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Andre Thornton Park on the north side of the borough of Phoenixville PA. A park grand opening ceremony is planned, and free book bags and school supplies will be distributed while they last.

Motorcyclists from around the area will be welcomed into the borough Saturday (Aug. 28, 2010) from Noon to 6 p.m. during the second annual Phoenixville Bike Day,  to be held on Bridge Street between Main and Gay streets. Chestnut Knoll, an assisted living community located at 120 W. 5th St., Boyertown PA, will observe its 10th anniversary Saturday (Aug. 28, 2010) from 3-5 p.m. with a “Celebrating The Lives We’ve Touched” event at the facility. Ever wonder what it’s like to wander a park at night?  Wonder no more; families and individuals alike are encouraged to bring their flashlights for a guided nighttime excursion around Chester County’s Warwick Park on Aug. 28 (2010; Saturday) from 8-9:30 p.m. starting at park Pavilion 1, at 191 County Park Rd., Pottstown PA. Jay Erb of the county Parks and Recreation Department staff will help participants explore the park’s “dark side,” with its creatures and critters. The event is free.

Sunday, Aug. 29

Spend a casual summer Sunday from 1-4 p.m. at Pottsgrove Manor, West King Street, Pottstown PA, as volunteers demonstrate a variety of 18th Century trades and pastimes during the last of five weekly historical adventures called “Living History Sundays.” Costumed interpreters will live life the colonial way, with activities such as needlework, gun-smithing, butter churning, and tape-loom weaving. Visitors can watch, learn, and even join in; activities will vary weekly. A donation of $2 per person is suggested. For more information, call 610-326-4014.

Colorful and fascinating monarch butterflies, which begin to migrate south as the length of daylight shortens, will be the subjects of a program sponsored by the Chester County Parks and Recreation Department on Aug. 29 (2010; Sunday) from 2-3:30 p.m. at Pavilion 2 in Warwick County Park, 191 County Park Rd., Pottstown PA. Many questions remain unanswered about the migration of monarchs east of the Rocky Mountains. Chester County park rangers Jay Erb and Lisa Miller will have participants help tag and monitor these butterflies.
