Got The Skills? Township's Got A Job, And A Deadline

SANATOGA PA – If you know how to plow snow, cut grass and fix potholes – no, not at your home, but on public properties and highways – Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township is interested in talking to you about a job opportunity. But hurry! You have only until Wednesday (Sept. 8, 2010) to submit a resume and application.

Take the position, and you'll probably think of this place as "the office."

The township is proceeding with plans, authorized July 22 by the Board of Commissioners, to hire a full-time public works department laborer. The maintenance crew is short-staffed, commissioners agreed, and has a lot of fall and winter work ahead of it. Consequently,  Manager Rodney Hawthorne has spent portions of recent weeks updating the job description and advertising for candidates.

Job duties “include snow plowing, grass cutting and road repairs. Additional duties include but are not limited to cleaning storm water drains, working in sanitary sewer manholes, and other sewer-related activities. Experience in both areas (is) preferred,” the township employment posting reports.

Applicants also “must have knowledge of construction-related equipment, such as (a) backhoe, jackhammer, chainsaw and tamper.” A valid Pennsylvania driver’s license also is required.

Those qualified can still apply, according to Lower Pottsgrove’s website. The deadline is Wednesday at 4 p.m. Applications must be submitted before that time at the municipal building, 2199 Buchert Rd., Pottstown PA. The posting says the township is an equal opportunity employer.

The posting does not specify the rate of pay, which commissioners set at about $14.50 hourly for unskilled labor, and between $16 and $17 hourly for skilled labor. It does say, however, that the township offers an “excellent benefit package.”
