Contest! Are You As Smart As A Pottsgrove Junior?

POTTSTOWN PA – Results from the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) 2009-2010 school year math tests, which Pottsgrove School District students in grades 3-8 and 11 completed earlier this year, were released last week (Sept. 14, 2010) by the state Department of Education. They show district learners generally improved over the previous year, with some making significant progress.

The test given to juniors is no cakewalk. Several problems require logic, deduction and critical thinking skills, in addition to mathematics ability.

So The Post proposes a showdown: you, vs. the 11th graders.

The two questions illustrated in red at top are examples offered by the state as part of PSSA introductory materials distributed in January. Can YOU solve them, and win $20 for a Pottsgrove student organization?

  • Send a single e-mail with your answers (not just one, but both) to The Post (sanatoga@yahoo.com) by no later than Saturday (Sept. 25) at midnight.
  • Please put the words “PSSA Math” in the subject line.
  • Include your first and last name and the village, township or borough where you live.
  • And tell us which Pottsgrove School District club, group, or student organization you want to benefit from your success.

One sender will be randomly chosen from all correct answers received. The Post will make a $20 donation to the club or organization of his or her choosing at any of the district’s three elementary schools, or middle or high school. The winner will be announced in The Post next Monday (Sept. 27), the day before the Pottsgrove Board of School Directors’ second meeting of September.

For the security conscious (and if you aren’t, you should be), be assured The Post will NOT use e-mail replies for any purpose other than this contest. Addresses won’t be spammed, junked, saved or sold. All responses will be deleted from our inbox when the contest ends.

If you have trouble finding the solutions, remember … you could always ask an 11th grader for help.
