An upcoming Pottsgrove seminar covers texting and other social networking.
POTTSTOWN PA – No LOL: what parents don’t know about social networking can be endangering their children. But there’s reason to ;-) . The staff of Pottsgrove High School has them covered.
If the abbreviations and emoticons in the above paragraph have you baffled, then you’re among those who should be in attendance at a special seminar next month.
The second installment of the high school’s free Parent Learning Series workshops is titled “Social Networking: Keeping Your Kids Safe on the Internet,” and is intended to keep parents informed on what’s acceptable – and more importantly, what’s not – in the world of texting, Twitter, MySpace and Facebook. It is scheduled for Nov. 22 (2010; Monday) at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the high school, Kauffman Road, Pottstown PA.

Participants need not be limited to parents of high schoolers, Principal Chris Shaffer wrote Tuesday (Oct. 12) in an e-mail. He’s extended an invitation to all district parents, and the general public, to attend. “If you have a son or daughter who uses social networking sites,” Shaffer noted, “this session is a must.”
The social networking discussion will follow on the heels of what Shaffer described as a “very informative, interactive, and eye-opening” session titled “Drugs 101,” held Oct. 7 also at the high school. About 25 parents showed up for the presentation made by two Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township police officers, he wrote.
“The facilitators frequently stopped the presentation to answer parent questions, share personal and professional experiences, and … engage the parents in a dialog regarding possible solutions to our issues,” according to Shaffer.
A slide presentation created by the police department is available for viewing online from the district website, here.
