College Shuttle Continues Free Ride Through Spring

Montgomery County Community College's shuttle service rolls out of the Pottstown campus toward its sister location in Blue Bell PA

POTTSTOWN PA – The shuttle bus program that since Sept. 1 (2010) has offered free transportation to Montgomery County Community College students commuting between its Pottstown and Blue Bell PA campuses has been given added life. It will be extended through the end of May 2011, the college announced last week.

The college also said it is adding Fridays to its shuttle schedule for the spring. In total, it will provide five runs daily from each campus between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., starting and ending in Pottstown.

The shuttle enables students to travel back and forth between campuses for classes and activities. They’ll continue to ride without charge for the college’s spring 2011 semester, which runs from Jan. 19-May 11. It’s likely, however, that a shuttle fee will be charged to users if the program returns for the coming fall semester.

Extending its schedule enables the college to gather more accurate rider data. It also lets students without other means of transportation to enroll in campus-specific courses for which they might not otherwise have access. Courses in radiography and surgical technology, for example, are available only in Pottstown; nursing and dental hygiene are available only in Blue Bell.

The shuttle currently averages 115 rides per week. It can accommodate up to 14 passengers, is wheelchair accessible, and is equipped with wireless Internet access for laptop computers. Each run takes 45 to 50 minutes; rush hour runs take up to an hour.

The pilot program is being managed by the Greater Valley Forge Transportation Management Association (GVFTMA) in coordination with TransNet Suburban Transit Network Inc.
