Off We Go, Into The Wild Blue Yonder …

Leann Pettit.

PHOENIXVILLE PA – If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to ride in one of those hot air balloons often seen drifting above Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township early on a calm morning, Leann Petit wants you to wonder no more.

Petit is the editor of The (Phoenixville PA) Phoenix newspaper, and an accomplished cook and traveler too. She and friends took off last week (Nov. 18, 2010) with the U.S. Hot Air Balloon Team, a company that conducts flights from locations in Montgomery, Chester and Berks (PA) counties. They glided across the township and above adjacent Limerick, enjoying the sunrise and passing by the Exelon Nuclear cooling towers.

She also interviewed the team’s pilot, Stan, about coping with weather conditions.

Township Historical Society Open House This Sunday

Township Historical Society Open House This Sunday

Outside the Historical Society museum.

SANATOGA PA – The monthly open house of the Lower Pottsgrove Historical Society returns this Sunday (Nov. 28, 2010) from 1-4 p.m., as its members throw wide to the public the doors of their museum inside the former Sanatoga Union Sunday School chapel, 2341 E. High St., Pottstown PA.

By the way, member Beth Scherer adds, if you’re coming and you’ve got cash register tapes from purchases made at a Redner’s Food Market, won’t you bring them along? The society collects and redeems the receipts as part of its chapel maintenance fund-raising, and would appreciate assistance.

The society plans to hold its annual member Christmas party Dec. 8 (2010; Wednesday) after their regular monthly meeting, which starts at 7:30 p.m., also in the museum.

20101123-HunterKnighton

Hill’s Hunter Goes Hunting For Football Recruitment

Hunter Knighton.

POTTSTOWN PA – The Hill School‘s Hunter Knighton would like your attention, please. Actually he’d prefer the attention of college football scouts, but for now you’ll do.

Knighton is a 6-foot 4-inch, 222-pound assembly of muscle and brawn who currently plays defense for the Pottstown PA prepatory school’s Rams football team. He’d like to attract the notice of college teams that may have need of his services after graduation. So, like many young players who foresee some kind of future in their sport, he’s promoting himself now with a video highlights reel.

High school sports news publisher Scout.com reports Knighton this year already has been invited by the University of Pittsburgh and Notre Dame to come and watch their games and mingle with team members. That’s considered a promising start.

Reportage And Commentary On Sunday’s Pottstown Shooting

POTTSTOWN PA – The brazen shooting Sunday afternoon (Nov. 21, 2010) of a 14-year-old boy on a street in a historic Pottstown PA neighborhood has property owners fearful and community activists up in arms. Here’s what’s being reported and said, culled from The Post’s news feeds as of Tuesday (Nov. 23) at 10:30 a.m.

News

  • Shooting shows how social networking changes news-gathering (Pottstown PA Mercury)
There was a time when the shooting of a 14-year-old teen in broad daylight, would have had neighbors talking over their back fences, or at church or at a community meeting. But there is another place community conversations happen these days.
  • Pottstown shocked by Sunday shooting of teen (Pottstown PA Mercury)
A town and neighborhood already unsettled by gunplay on a previously quiet street was sent reeling Sunday when news spread of the shooting of a 14-year-old boy in Rowan Alley in broad daylight.
  • Shooting victim in ‘stable’ condition (Pottstown PA Mercury)
Officials at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia confirmed Monday that Pottstown’s latest shooting victim is in “stable” condition, but would not release any further information.
  • 14-year-old shot in Pottstown (Pottstown PA Mercury)
A 14-year-old Pottstown boy was flown Sunday afternoon to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia after being shot between Chestnut Street and Rowan Alley in the area of North Evans Street.

Commentary

  • What Will It Take To Make Pottstown Safe? (Roy’s Rants)
If these “gangs” are willing to shoot someone in broad daylight it tells me they are fairly confident they can get away with it. They are not afraid of our local law enforcement.

No Change In Town’s 2011 Base Tax Rate, But Bills To Rise Slightly

No Change In Town’s 2011 Base Tax Rate, But Bills To Rise Slightly

POTTSTOWN PA – Property taxes levied by Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township on real estate within its borders would remain unchanged for another year, and carry no planned increase, under a $5.39 million tentative 2011 general fund budget being released this morning (Monday, Nov. 23, 2010) at 8 a.m. for public inspection and review.

Taxpayers’ total township bills, however, will nonetheless go up slightly, because Lower Pottsgrove would collect a higher fire protection tax for services rendered by the Sanatoga and Ringing Hill fire companies.

If finally adopted next month (December 2010) by the Board of Commissioners, the township base tax rate will remain stable at 1.958 mills, or about $1.96 for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value. The dedicated fire services tax would rise 6 cents, to a total of .46 mills, or 46 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.

Altogether, on a home in Lower Pottsgrove assessed at $200,000, its owners by year-end 2011 will have paid about $484 in township property taxes, or about $12 more than they did this year.

Separately, trash collection fees during 2011 will go up too, by $12 to a total of $142 a year, due to an increase built into the township’s contract with hauler J.P. Mascaro And Sons of Norristown PA.

To make the budget numbers work, commissioners plan to:

  • Tap a piggy bank of unreserved funds. Commissioners will transfer $621,450 from township savings to avoid a tax increase, just as they’ve done in amounts ranging from $285,423 to $760,946 since 2007.
  • Expect an increase in earned income tax (EIT) revenues, by roughly $330,000 to a total of $1.6 million. The amount is significantly higher than the corresponding EIT revenue of budgets in any year since 2007. At the same time, according to township Manager Rodney Hawthorne, the budget “assumes a no-growth economy.” During the past three years, budgeted EIT ranged from a low of $1.27 million (2010) to a high of $1.5 million (2009).
  • Reduce overall expenses. The tentative 2011 budget of $5,399,617 is fractionally smaller, $40,022 less, than the 2010 budget.

All figures cited are included in printed budget documents unanimously approved last Thursday (Nov. 18) by commissioners. Coming editions of The Post will offer expanded stories on various aspects of the budget. The budget in its entirety is available for public inspection weekdays during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the municipal building, 2199 Buchert Rd., Pottstown PA.

Social Nets, Cyber-Bullies Topics For Pottsgrove Workshops

Social Nets, Cyber-Bullies Topics For Pottsgrove Workshops

What are teens saying in those texts?

POTTSTOWN PA – A second workshop in the free Parent Learning Series at Pottsgrove High School, titled “Social Networking: Keeping Your Kids Safe on the Internet,” will be held tonight (Monday, Nov. 22, 2010) at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the high school, Kauffman Road, Pottstown PA. It’s intended to keep parents informed on what’s acceptable – and more precisely, what’s not – in the world of texting, Twitter, MySpace and Facebook.

Keep tomorrow open, too. The third Pottsgrove workshop follows close behind, on Tuesday (Nov. 23) at the same time and in the same place, to cover the related topic of cyber-bullying.

Participants need not be limited to parents of high schoolers, Principal Chris Shaffer wrote in a recent e-mail. He’s extended an invitation to all district parents, and the general public, to attend. “If you have a son or daughter who uses social networking sites,” Shaffer noted, “this session is a must.”

The Monday and Tuesday evening agendas take advantage of the Pottsgrove School District’s schedule for parent-teacher conferences. Many parents are likely to be in and around the high school on one or both nights.

Both sessions will be presented by district resource officer and Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Police Department Ofc. Will James, and the high school’s Krista Rundell and March Shuster.
