Senate Education Chair Preps For Voucher, Choice Battle

Sen. Jeff Piccola.

HARRISBURG PA – “Public educators are just going to have to understand that the money is not there and we’re going to have to find ways to do it less expensively. Choice is one of the ways you do it.”

With those words, offered by Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee Chairman Jeff Piccola in an exclusive interview Monday (Dec. 13, 2010) with The Pennsylvania Independent online news service, the stage has been set for a potential series of showdowns between public school districts and state legislators over the issues of school choice and vouchers.

Piccola describes a system that would allow parents to send their children to private schools, or even other public schools outside the districts in which they live. He also favors expanding cyber and charter school offerings. The combined result might further limit state funding provided to districts themselves.
