Hop-On, Hop-Off Shuttles Promoted For Mall Shoppers

Ashley Pompei, assistant marketing manager for the malls.

KING OF PRUSSIA PA – Separate shuttle buses for employees and customers at the King of Prussia PA Mall will make their final runs around the vast shopping complex this Sunday (Dec. 26, 2010), the day after Christmas. Until then, though, the shuttles are reducing aggravation endured by package-burdened buyers, and saving a little of the planet, too.

The Greater Valley Forge Transportation Management Association (GVFTMA), which operates offices in Pottstown, partnered with mall management to operate the complimentary shuttles. Now running in their third consecutive year, they circulate the connected centers on a regular schedule to continuously help shoppers get from store to store without returning to their cars. They also move workers from employee parking lots to their destinations.

It’s convenient for all, and helps to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions, according to GVFTMA.

Chip Skips, Steps His Way Through Holiday Part-Hey

POTTSTOWN PA – Who says mascots never have any Christmas fun?

Chip, and a friend.

Chip, the sparkling, diamond-headed mascot of Diamond Credit Union, headquartered on Medical Drive in Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township, was the break-dancing spectacle of the credit union’s recent Christmas party. Chip waltzed into a conference room filled with employees and food, and – accompanied by Santa Claus himself – proceeded to bust a move to a holiday record by the rap group Run DNC.

The file was uploaded Monday (Dec. 20, 2010). Radical, dudes.

Accusations Fly At Planners’ Meeting Over Buchert Ridge

Accusations Fly At Planners’ Meeting Over Buchert Ridge

SANATOGA PA – An obviously frustrated Sanatoga-based real estate developer, during Monday night’s (Dec. 20, 2010) Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township Planning Commission meeting, accused the municipality’s staff of failing to abide by an understanding he thought he had reached with other township representatives, and of unnecessarily delaying a project he wants to expand on Buchert Road.

Developer J. Wilmer Hallman, who hopes to add a three-story garden suite apartment complex that would be certified as environmentally friendly to his Buchert Ridge housing community, 2011 Buchert Rd., Pottstown PA, alleged a previously scheduled review of his plans was wrongly removed from the board’s agenda. The resulting delay, he said, could cost “hundreds of thousands of dollars” over the life of the project.

Hallman did not identify specific individuals, but clearly directed his wrath toward township Manager Rodney Hawthorne, Assistant Manager Alyson Elliott and Chad Camburn, who represents Lower Pottsgrove’s engineering firm, Bursich Associates Inc. Hawthorne, who Hallman claimed had arbitrarily canceled his project’s review, was not present at the meeting; Elliott and Camburn, both of whom attended, denied the accusations.

The commission took no action, despite Hallman’s urging that it recommend the apartment plans as submitted to the township Zoning Hearing Board. “We have no new information” on the proposal, Chairman Frank Cebular said, “and we can’t do anything about it until we do.”

However, Commissioner Ronald Dinnocenti – himself a former developer – offered Hallman some interesting advice: Return to the commission with “the meanest son-of-a-bitch lawyer you can find” in tow. “You’ll get things done pretty fast that way,” Dinnocenti suggested.

Township Commissioner James Phillips sat in the audience while the back-and-forth argument raged.

At issue are a list of items in Hallman’s plans that, unless modified to conform with existing regulations, will require several zoning waivers. Hallman disagrees with staff interpretations of the law on some; suggested a few involve private property rights beyond the township’s oversight, and contended others had been addressed and solved earlier in meetings he had with his attorney, Hawthorne, and township Solicitor R. Kurtz Holloway.

“I’m not blaming the Planning Commission, but I am blaming the staff,” Hallman said.

Hallman wants to erect the multi-story “green-certified” apartments, designed to appeal to retirees, in a zoning district that limits building height. Parking, a public transit turn-around, and property line set-backs apparently also pose problems. His initial plans, which won strong endorsement from the township Board of Commissioners in October 2009, have since changed considerably, Cebular said. “We’ve had to look at it with new eyes,” he added.

From Afghanistan, A Township Resident Sends His Best

Robert Lindgren.

HERAT, AFGHANISTAN – Former Pottsgrove School Board member Robert “Bob” Lindgren may be thousands of miles distant from his Lower Pottsgrove Township family this Christmas, but he’s now also just a click away.

Lindgren, a Pine Hurst Drive, Pottstown PA, resident and U.S. Navy Reserve commander stationed in Herat, Afghanistan, is one of 7,079 Pennsylvanians who have had their videotaped holiday greetings for family and friends sent to the media by the Defense Video and Imagery Distribution System (DVIDS) during the past two months.

Two such greetings, from area servicemen and women stationed in Germany and Alaska, respectively, were put online by The Post Publications this week. Lindgren’s however, apparently was lost in paperwork exchanged between DVIDS and the Joint Hometown News Service, with which The Posts work.

Lost, that is, until the service’s Broadcast Chief Natasha Schleper notified Post Managing Editor Joe Zlomek by Monday afternoon (Dec. 20, 2010) e-mail that dozens more “last-minute” holiday videos could be downloaded immediately. Lindgren’s was among them, and now is ready for viewing.

DVIDS records indicate Lindgren’s greeting was taped Nov. 15 at 3:53 p.m. as he stood outside the regional command headquarters where he works in Afghanistan. He offered his love and best wishes to his wife and children by name, and said he’s looking forward to seeing them all soon.

Lindgren resigned from the Board of School Directors of the Pottsgrove School District earlier this year so the board could complete district business with a successor. That turned out to be Director Patti Grimm. He also left the chairmanship of the township Sewer Authority, although his name and title still appear on the authority’s page at the township website.

Township Blares ‘Welcome Home!’ To Returning Marine

Township Blares ‘Welcome Home!’ To Returning Marine

SANATOGA PA – With an escort of police vehicles, motorcycles, fire trucks, and cars filled with joyful family members, U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Robert Safford (left) was welcomed back Sunday afternoon (Dec. 19, 2010) from military service in Afghanistan to his family’s home on Bleim Road in Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township. He is on Christmas leave for two weeks, and then will ship out to California for another 10 months of duty, relatives said.

The quiet, smiling Marine was met by Pennsylvania state troopers while he and his family were traveling west from church services in King of Prussia, and Lower Pottsgrove police took over at the township line.

With horns blaring and sirens raging, an army of happy volunteers fell in line behind the Safford car. They created a welcoming parade that traveled north on Rupert Road from U.S. Route 422, then west on Pruss Hill Road to North Pleasant View, and the short turn west again onto Bleim.

Ringing Hill Fire Company, which would have normally provided the fire escort, had its members occupied with their annual Santa Run, which also occurred Sunday. “We’re pleased our members could be here to represent Ringing Hill in this duty,” Sanatoga Fire Company Chief Rick Brendlinger said. “We’re happy to cover for them.”

The escort, as well as a presentation of certificates of appreciation, was organized by “A Hero’s Welcome,” the 3-year-old group dedicated to ensuring all returning veterans are welcomed home from duty, and by the motorcyclists of the southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of Warriors’ Watch Riders. Maria Hyland, mother of A Hero’s Welcome founder and 1997 Pottsgrove High School graduate Sharon Hyland Keyser, and Warriors’ Watch representative Tim Rooney both were on hand to offer hugs and handshakes as Safford was encircled by about 100 family members, friends, and neighbors.

The temperature was cold but the sun shone brightly as Safford, dressed comfortably in shirt sleeves and jeans, embraced relatives and strangers alike. Both he and his grandfather, Robert Safford Sr., who also served as a Marine, were honored with A Hero’s Welcome certificates. Rooney also called to the front of the crowd other servicemen and women who had arrived to give their best wishes.

A large, hand-made banner that proclaimed “Welcome Home” fluttered in the breeze from atop the porch roof line of the Safford house. Red, white and blue balloons were attached to the mailbox at the roadside, and flags were seemingly everywhere. Traffic respectfully stopped and waited for the parade to pass at every intersection. Some drivers rolled their windows down to wave and shout, and on Bleim Road one woman without a coat stood at the edge of her front lawn to cheer the procession.

Safford actually arrived in Lower Pottsgrove on Friday night; Ringing Hill was contacted Saturday, and A Hero’s Welcome worked with the Marine’s family, Warriors’ Watch, law enforcement and other groups to pull the parade and ceremony together in less than 24 hours. “He’s a hometown hero,” Lower Pottsgrove Fire Marshal Lou Babel said. “For something like this, short notice is never a problem for either of our fire companies.”
