School Budget Task Force Kicks Off Its Work Tonight

POTTSTOWN PA – Want a say in how your school taxes are spent? Or aren’t? If so, tonight’s your night.

The long-planned, weather-delayed first meeting of the Pottsgrove School District Community Budget Task Force opens tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011) at 7 p.m. in Pottsgrove High School, 1345 Kauffman Rd., Pottstown PA. Its primary goal: find ways to close what currently looms as a $1.2 million deficit in the district 2011-2012 preliminary budget of $58.5 million.

Beyond that, though, the district Board Of School Directors hopes task force members will give some indication of what’s important, and what’s not, in the way the district spends its revenue. Ultimately, directors have told Superintendent Dr. Bradley Landis, they’d like to see about $6 million in cost-cutting or savings recommendations from task force members.

Landis reports more than 70 people so far have volunteered to work on the task force and its several committees. It represents real dedication on the volunteers’ part, he acknowledged; the overall and smaller groups are expected to hold hours of discussions in meetings between now and April, when the board expects a final report.

There’s still time for any interested district residents to join the effort. They can simply show up and sign up tonight, and potentially help shape the direction of local education for years to come.

Plans to organize the task force, modeled after a similar exercise conducted last year in the West Chester School District, began in September 2010. Tonight’s kick-off was scheduled for two weeks earlier, but was postponed due to winter storms.
