Trout Rodeo Launches Six Weeks of Township Fun

They'll be waiting for kids to arrive April 23 at Sunnybrook

SANATOGA PA – Exelon Nuclear and its nearby Limerick Generating Station has donated $500 to help sponsor the Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township Police Department‘s annual trout rodeo, a family event geared toward children between ages 4 and 13 and scheduled for April 23 (2011; Saturday) beginning at 7:30 a.m. in Sprogel’s Run at Sunnybrook Ballroom, 50 Sunnybrook Rd., Pottstown PA.

Registration for the trout rodeo officially kicked off Monday (April 4), as the township Board of Commissioners announced the utility company’s contribution during its first meeting of the month.

The trout rodeo represents just one of three public programs intended to entertain township residents and families during the next six weeks. Also scheduled are the Parks and Recreation Department‘s annual Easter Egg Hunt, as well as the Police Department’s popular bicycle rodeo and spring bike safety program.

See that smile! Everybody loves a "bunny hop" sack race

When the trout rodeo got its start, police and other volunteers spent hours cleaning out and netting in a portion of the run, and stocking it with trout for the kids’ amateur fishing competition. It was well received as another vehicle of interaction between the department and the community.

As in the past, advance registration for the trout rodeo is required. For more information about it or to register a child, call the department at 610-326-1508.

The Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for April 16 (Saturday) beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Gerald Richards Park on Buchert Road. Thousands of colorful plastic eggs, stuffed with small toys and candy, will be scattered over several large marked circles at the park. Each circle is created for different age groups, ensuring that egg hunters compete for their finds only against their peers.

The Parks and Recreation Department also has “bunny hop” sack races planned for the day, and the Easter Bunny (or someone who looks like him; last year, that honor went to a member of Commissioner James Kaiser’s family) will be available to meet and pose for photos with egg hunters.

Then, on May 21, the Police Department returns with its annual bicycle rodeo from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lower Pottsgrove Elementary School, Buchert Road, Pottstown PA. The rodeo invites children and their parents to bring bicycles and helmets to the parking lots in front of the school, where officers will have laid out a course to teach safe riding habits. Local vendors also have been available to offer free bicycle condition checks and minor repairs and tune-ups.
