Six Pottsgrove Coaches + Five Camps = Busy Summer

POTTSTOWN PA – Six coaches and five sports could add up to a busy summer this year for students athletes in the Pottsgrove School District.

Permission was granted last Tuesday (May 10, 2011) by the district Board of School Directors for six of its varsity sports coaches to operate summer camps using district facilities. In all cases the coaches are volunteering their time, primarily for the betterment of future teams, and will not be compensated, Superintendent Dr. Bradley Landis reported.

Approved were:

  • Field hockey camp, run by Falcons head field hockey coach Christine Campbell, from June 20-24, for students entering grades 3-8. Its cost will be $75 per person;

Pottsgrove 2012 Travels Include Italy, Latin America

Pottsgrove 2012 Travels Include Italy, Latin America

A few will need this.

A few will need this.

POTTSTOWN PA – Education never goes out of style, and travel is fun. Put them together and, in the Pottsgrove School District, it generates an itinerary a travel agent might envy.

Beginning this July, and continuing through the following 12 months, 12 different student excursions have been authorized by the district Board of School Directors. That’s two fewer than the current school year. For all but one, noted below, all expenses are paid by participating students, Superintendent Dr. Bradley Landis reported.

Several are to sports-related camps. Three involve the district chapters of Delta Epsilon Chi (DECA), an international association of students interested in marketing careers. A few more exotic locales offer cultural value.

Authorization of such travel is an exercise that appears annually on the board’s agenda. It unanimously and without comment approved these future jaunts during its meeting last Tuesday (May 10, 2011) at Pottsgrove High School, Kauffman Road, Pottstown PA. The destinations, listed in bold type and in dated order, are:

  • Gettysburg PA, July 30-Aug. 3, 2011. Boys Soccer camp at Gettysburg College; cost $350 per person.
  • Preston Park PA, Aug. 21-26, 2011. Football camp at Camp Wayne; cost $225 per person.
  • Elverson PA, Aug. 24-26, 2011. Boys and girls cross-country camp at French Creek State Park; cost $30 per person.
  • Altoona PA, Nov. 10-12, 2011. Middle School student government to PASC state conference, cost $110 per person.
  • Philadelphia PA, Nov. 18-20, 2011. DECA Southern and North Atlantic Regional Conference, $300 per person.
  • Hershey PA, Feb. 22-24, 2012. DECA state career trip; cost $250 per person.
  • Italy and Greece, March 27-April 5, 2012. Cost $3,022 per person.
  • Wallops Island VA, April 22-25, 2012. Advanced Biology Trip; cost $375 per person.
  • Salt Lake City UT, April 22-May 2, 2012. DECA International Trip, about $1,000 per student, paid for by the district. As in the past, this particular trip involves a limited number (4) of students and is being treated the same as an athletic team traveling to competition in another state.
  • Orlando FL, May 29-June 2, 2012. Senior class trip; cost $1,099 per person.
  • Kutztown PA, July 14-17, 2012. Girls basketball camp at Kutztown University; cost $240 per person.
  • Latin America, 2012 dates to be determined. High school trip; estimated at $3,000 per person.

Inflation has hit the travel business too, most likely in the increased costs of fuel. Of local and regional trips that repeat from last year, per-person costs rose by between $5 and $15 per person. Some longer distance trips have risen substantially more.

Legislative Bills Might Deprive Papers Of Legal Revenue

HARRISBURG PA — Newspapers across Pennsylvania may be facing the loss of critical advertising dollars, as the state Legislature considers allowing local governments to put public notices online, instead of in local papers, The Pennsylvania Independent online news service reported Friday (May 13, 2011).

Bills are progressing in the state House and state Senate to eliminate the requirement of publishing public notices in local newspapers. Advocates say the measures would save municipalities millions of dollars; critics argue they could lead to more secrecy at the local level of government.

Pottsgrove Offers Online Seminar On Preventing Abuse

POTTSTOWN PA – “Strengthening Families,” a 35-minute online-only seminar targeted in part to Pottsgrove School District parents, teachers and community residents to help prevent child abuse and neglect, will be held May 25 (2011; Wednesday) from 12:05-12:40 p.m. during what is being billed as a “lunchtime learning session” on the web.

The school district last week distributed a e-mail encouraging participation in the seminar, presented by Family Support and Community Development Coordinator Lynda Martino on behalf of the Center for Schools and Communities.

The session intends to introduce five concepts that help build families’ capacities to promote healthy and safe child development, reduce abuse and neglect, and improve school success.

All participants will receive e-mail instructions that confirm their registration and describe how to download and install software necessary to see and hear the event. Register online, here.

Township Resident Opening ‘Burger Joint’ At Upland

POTTSTOWN PA – After months of work to choose the right business, secure franchise rights, and negotiate a lease for the best possible location, Lower Pottsgrove (PA) businesswoman Lynda Hendershot is preparing to open the newest of what is billed as “America’s hometown burger joint,” a Jake’s Wayback Burgers restaurant in the Upland Square Shopping Center, 255 Upland Square Drive, Pottstown PA.

Hendershot’s operation, which she says is destined to employ 30 people, is scheduled to open during July. It will be one of nine new Jake’s locations, four of them in Pennsylvania, set to launch within the next three months, the Cheshire CT-based company announced Wednesday (May 11, 2011).

Jake’s so far has 27 restaurants located in eight states, many across the mid-Atlantic region. It is “rapidly expanding” and expects to sell more than 100 franchises this year alone, according to company spokesperson Gillian Maffeo. Other locations to open this month, and during June and July, are in New York and Ohio markets, Maffeo said.

Hendershot, who sampled more than a few hamburgers in her research phase, reports Jake’s sandwiches are “hand-pattied from 100% fresh, never-frozen ground beef and grilled to order.” The restaurant also will offer milkshakes made by hand, marinated grilled chicken sandwiches, veggie burgers, turkey burgers, salads and house-made chips.

Construction at Upland Square is already under way.

Sanatoga Job Fair Wednesday Gets Better: 60 Employers

SANATOGA PA – What was already expected to be a big employment event next week has become even bigger.

A career fair scheduled to be held by the TriCounty Community Network (TCN) on Wednesday (May 18, 2011) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Sunnybrook Ballroom, 50 Sunnybrook Rd., Pottstown PA, initially anticipated attracting about 50 employers. Now the number has climbed to 60, TCN Executive Director Jen Doyle reported Thursday (May 12), and even more could sign on before the event opens.

In fact, employers, here’s your chance to find good, local help: to be part of the action, call Don Stewart at 610-326-2705. Of course, a greater number of job providers present a greater number of potential opportunities available to applicants, and in this troubling economy that’s the whole idea, Doyle says.

The event is the latest project to result from the network’s partnership in a workforce development program with Exelon Nuclear, Montgomery County Community College, and the TriCounty Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Pottstown-based network, of which The Post is a member, is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving health, social and environmental conditions in western Montgomery, northern Chester and eastern Berks counties.

There’s still time, according to TCN, for people who want help preparing for their employment interviews to get it. The network has job prep workshops scheduled for:

  • Today (Friday, May 13) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the YWCA Tri-County Area, 315 E. King St., Pottstown; and
  • Again at the YWCA on Tuesday (May 17) from 4-6 p.m.

Those interested in attending a workshop should call TCN at 610-705-3301.

Career fair sponsors include Exelon, Sunnybrook Foundation, the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, the Montgomery County Workforce Investment Board, and The (Pottstown) Mercury newspaper.
