Commissioners OK KenCrest ‘Temporary’ Greenhouse

SANATOGA PA – KenCrest, the more than 100-year-old group that serves Delaware Valley residents who suffer from intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism, on Monday (Aug. 1, 2011) won approval from the Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township Board of Commissioners to build a temporary greenhouse at 1494 N. Charlotte St., Pottstown PA, for its horticultural therapy program.

Commissioners agreed to waive KenCrest’s need to submit and have accepted a land development plan for its structure, normally required under township law. They cited the non-profit and health-related nature of the greenhouse, as well as the fact that its operation would be both temporary and seasonal, as reasons for their approval.

But there’s a hitch or, if you prefer, a worm in the compost.

Commissioners limited their waiver to only three years’ duration. KenCrest must decide by August 2014 whether it will remain at the North Charlotte Street site or relocate, hopefully elsewhere within the township. In either case, board members said, a land development plan would then be due.

KenCrest officials said the program involves 21 people between the ages of 18 and 50.
