POTTSTOWN PA – In the rock ‘em, sock ‘em, take-no-prisoners world of women’s roller derby, western Montgomery County has its own stars … the Pottstown Roller Derby Rockstars – who now, it also turns out – are video stars, too.
The team is a non-profit organization that it says “fosters a non-judgmental, fun, and empowering environment for skaters and supporters to experience the sport of flat-track roller derby. We promote a sense of loyalty, sisterhood, and athleticism among our family of all-female skaters.”
It’s not just about the sport, though. The Rockstars also “strives to serve its community by participating in charitable events, youth outreach programs, and set a standard of discipline and integrity to which women can aspire,” its Facebook page noted.
Besides all that, they’re fun to watch.
The team’s practice sessions in Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township are free and open to the public during September; their next scheduled practice will be this Friday (Sept. 16, 2011) from 8-10 p.m. at the 422 Sportsplex, Industrial Highway, Pottstown. In addition, tickets are being sold now for the team’s first intra-league home bout, set for Oct. 29.
