Pottsgrove Sets Dates For Redistrict Committee Work

POTTSTOWN PA – With more than enough public volunteers willing to help find a solution to elementary classroom overcrowding in the Pottsgrove School District, the Board of School Directors agreed Tuesday (Sept. 13, 2011) to schedule meetings next month and into November for its soon-to-be-formed Elementary Redistricting Committee.

Names of parent representatives from Lower and West Pottsgrove and Ringing Rocks elementary schools who will serve on the committee have yet to be announced. There are plenty to choose from, though, according to Superintendent Dr. Bradley Landis, who told directors many individuals from each of the three schools indicated they were ready to study the problem.

Committee members will be tasked with determining how the schools might be re-configured to make better use of building space and avoid overcrowding that has occurred in selected grades during recent years. The problem persisted this fall, Landis acknowledged, because “we had quite an influx of registrations over the late summer,” he said.

Most affected were West Pottsgrove, which in some grades had too many students per classroom, and Ringing Rocks, which had too few, director April Kontosathis noted. “After the committee does its work, we’re hoping we can strike a better balance between West and Rocks,” Landis replied.

At Landis’ suggestion, the board set aside Tuesday nights during weeks between its own monthly meetings to schedule the committee sessions. They will be held Oct. 18, Nov. 1, Nov. 15 and Nov. 29; a meeting place and time was not designated.

Applications from potential committee members were accepted through last Friday (Sept. 9). The committee also will include school board members, district office administration, principals and teacher representatives. Their recommendations for changes, if any, would not be implemented until the 2012-2013 school term.
