POTTSTOWN PA – A debate over whether the Pottsgrove School District will have the space, funds or inclination to expand its full-time kindergarten program is expected to continue for several weeks, as part of its redistricting discussions. In the interim, however, children are being sought to attend kindergarten next year, no matter what form those classes take.

The district announced Thursday (Feb. 2, 2012) it had begun gathering names for kindergarten registrations for 2012-2013. It’s specifically looking to identify children who will be 5 years old before Sept. 1, because they represent prospective students eligible to start school in the fall.

Parents of kindergarten-age students are being asked to contact the building their children would attend under existing district boundary lines. Call 610-327-2277 and dial Extension 4510 for Lower Pottsgrove, 5000 for West Pottsgrove, and 3000 for Ringing Rocks elementary schools, the district said.

Schools should be contacted before March 14, the district said, to ensure school information can be mailed to parents in advance of registration appointments. They are scheduled to be conducted throughout the day March 27 (Tuesday) at Lower, March 28 (Wednesday) at West, and March 29 (Thursday) at Ringing.

Each of the elementaries holds half-day and full-day classes for kindergarteners, but admission to the limited number of full-day sessions is restricted to those who may benefit from them most, as indicated in a district screening process.

The district hopes, under redistricting plans now being considered by the Board of School Directors, to both reduce class sizes and expand the full-day program. Those hopes hinge, however, on creation of grade-level education centers that some residents stridently oppose.
