PHILADELPHIA PA – Where you goin’? How far you goin’, and how you gonna get there?
No, that’s not a well-phrased sentenced, but it is essentially what the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) wants to know about travel within your household during the next 12 months.
The agency is sponsoring a year-long, region-wide travel survey to prepare for future transportation needs across Greater Philadelphia. The survey hopes to collect data about daily travel behaviors of residents in southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. The information will help DVRPC determine how to improve roads, reduce traffic congestion, enhance walking and bicycle paths, and upgrade public transportation.
Survey participation is voluntary and will involve 10,000 randomly selected households. Each household member will be asked to use a diary to record how, when, and where they travel for a single day during the year. About 500 participants also will be provided with a GPS device to carry on their day of travel.
The research firm Abt SRBI of New York City will conduct the survey from September 2012 to September 2013, DVRPC said Thursday (Aug. 30, 2012).
