POTTSTOWN PA – An extra duty aide to monitor first- and second-graders during mid-day recess at Ringing Rocks Elementary School will be added to its staff, Pottsgrove School District administrators wrote Friday (Sept. 28, 2012) in a comment to The Post, under a decision they said was made as a result of “parental input.”
No effective date was mentioned for the aide’s arrival, but it could be as soon as Monday (Oct. 1) or, if board approval is necessary, as late as Oct. 10. The addition of an aide would likely mean that adult supervisors during Ringing’s recess would be responsible for fewer children, and consequently could help address school playground safety concerns recently expressed by parents.
Those concerns were raised during the past week in comments on social media platforms, and became even more public Sunday (Sept. 23) with a complaint published in the “Sound Off” column of The (Pottstown PA) Mercury newspaper. They also were a discussion topic during the Board of School Directors’ meeting Tuesday (Sept. 25).
The administration’s comment was not signed by a specific individual, and could not be immediately verified because of its late submission at 4:56 p.m. The Post believes it to be authentic and credible, however, because it contains a word-for-word report on recess activities offered to directors by Assistant Superintendent Shellie A. Feola, to which none but administrators and board members had access.

The comment closes with the administration’s stated belief that its adjustments have placed “this situation firmly under control, but as always we will continue to monitor and adjust as needed.”
