He rocked the rafters with music of the 1950s and ’60s while telling stories of growing up in the city and the suburbs under the influence of Dick Clark’s American Bandstand and Philadelphia’s rich musical culture. Blavat started his music-oriented career as a Bandstand dancer, and recently published a book about his experiences. The dance event (above and below), which was well attended, represents what members of The Sunnybrook Foundation – the historic building’s owner – say is a resurgence for the ballroom after earlier operating missteps. New personnel have been placed in key operating positions, and an organized group of professionals and volunteers has been meeting regularly to discuss attractions and promotions.
